Red Bull Spotlight is a unique hunt to discover the best among India’s upcoming rappers.
The competition has been held as a rap hunt annually since 2019.
After several city qualifiers – mostly held in top Indian colleges and universities – the best from each city are then given a chance to record a single track in a studio for the next phase of the competition. Following this and a pre-qualifier round, the finalists are picked to perform in a national finale where they are judged by some of the biggest names from the Indian hip-hop community.
The national champion is then given the opportunity to record a full-length album at a professional studio, plus other benefits including a full press kit – complete with a photo shoot and album art for their newly recorded album. The national champion also gets a chance to record a professionally-produced music video to be released alongside the album.
About Red Bull Spotlight 2019
In 2019, Red Bull Spotlight had qualifying rounds in 10 cities.
Unos, Faqeersky56, Rocky Glock, MC Dodo, Dil Fake, Warboy x DEVM, Loud Silence, Swaggy, Y-Ash and Somani emerged as the finalists of Red Bull Spotlight 2019.
Each finalist was then given a chance to perform in front of a panel of judges consisting of Seedhe Maut, Swadesi and Dopeadelicz at the national finals in Mumbai.
Warboy x DEVM were selected as the national champions. Their debut album was released in January 2020 along with a music video for the lead single and a documentary about their journey to winning the title and recording their debut album.
The story of Red Bull Spotlight 2020
In 2020, Red Bull Spotlight qualifiers were conducted in 15 cities around India.
A virtual pre-qualifier was conducted, which was judged by Swadesi, where eight rappers were selected to proceed to the final rounds.
The eight rappers spent several days in Mumbai, attending a series of workshops, mentor sessions, one-on-one advice booths, performances, freestyle and battle rap face-offs, and more.
The eight young rappers then participated in a finale where they each performed one song in an attempt to be crowned the winner of Red Bull Spotlight.
The week of sessions, workshops and challenges, as well as the finale, was also documented in a six-part series, with each episode addressing a different aspect of music-making. The series had Seedhe Maut as Masters of Ceremony. Watch the series on MX Player now.
