Alaska Exploration by Bike: Backcountry Hut
Eric Porter and Kevin Murphy seek out a legendary hut deep in Alaskan backcountry.
The first option in the dictionary for the word adventure is “an exciting or very unusual experience.” While the experience that is adventure varies far and wide from person to person, mountain bike globetrotters Eric Porter and Kevin Murphy’s recent travels in Alaska hit that definition on the nose.
After spotting a backcountry hut in an Alaskan guidebook, Porter began making plans to cash in on the epic accommodations the only way he knows how, by bicycle. Photographer Mason Mashon joined the two intrepid bikers to document the journey in film and imagery.
The challenge? Located in the middle of nowhere, the trails to get to the remote hut have been growing over for years. “It’s like everything is trying to hurt you,” Porter explains, “It’s just miles of pushing and dragging your bike.”

The backcountry struggles proved worthwhile – rewarded with plenty of scenic views and their eventual arrival at the hiker's hut. “One thing I’ve learned is the best trips are never easy – pushing through the hard times always makes the reward better.”
