Courageous, broad-minded and open – that's the way that Anna Gasser describes herself. In November 2013 she proved all of these traits with a single trick – becoming the first woman to complete a Cab Double Cork 900. Overnight, she became the star of a new generation of female freestylers.
Always an active child, it was in gymnastics that Anna initially excelled. However, by the age of 15 she decided to step away from the sport. "It was way too time-consuming," she admits.
Hooked by snowboarding
For three years she went without dedicating herself to a sport, but she felt that "something was missing.” This feeling led the youngster to discover snowboarding, all thanks to her cousin. In the summer of 2010, he showed her a few snowboarding videos and Anna was instantly hooked.
The following winter she got on a board for the first time and, after just a few days, decided that she wanted to be a pro. Her friends laughed at her ambition at the time, but three years later she became the first woman to land a Double Cork 900!
Hard work pays off
Anna credits her rapid development to two things: her good physical shape and her determination. “I was boarding so much from my first day that I missed a good 50 percent of lessons in my last year of school.” She's anything but proud of that fact today, but all the hours of training paid off.
After finishing school, Anna took a gap year. She went to America and dedicated a whole year completely to snowboarding. When she returned to Austria, nobody was expecting too much from her. Then she did “this trick” and, all of a sudden, the whole world knew her name.
Breakthrough season
In February 2014, four years after first setting foot on a snowboard, the Austrian qualified first in slopestyle in Sochi. She went on to finish 10th. Then in 2017 came her breakthrough season. She claimed seven wins, including gold at the Burton US Open, victory at the snowboarding World Championships with a score of 100 in Big Air, X Games gold in Hafjell, the overall Big Air World Cup and was awarded an ESPY for Best Female Action Sports Athlete.
She didn't let up the pace following that incredible season, either. Her 2018 highlight reel includes both Winter Games and X Games gold, a gold medal from the Games (Snowboard Big Air) in PyeongChang and another world-first trick for a female rider: the Cab Triple Underflip.
Another women's world first followed in 2019, when Anna stomped a Cab Double Cork 1260 for the first time. She followed that up with gold at the 2020 X Games and secured the overall World Cup title in both Slopestyle and Park and Pipe in 2021.
The record-breaker
At the start of the 2024-25 season, she passed another milestone by finishing third at the FIS Big Air World Cup in Beijing, China. The podium finish was the 19th of her career, making her the all-time leader across both men's and women's big air competitions.
Continually adding to her medal haul, including Big Air gold from the Games in Beijing, Anna's latest record-breaking performance came on home ground at the Big Air Kreischberg event early in 2025, when she stomped her Cab Triple 1260 Drunk Driver in competition for the first time and secured an incredible 10th Big Air World Cup win - her 13th World Cup in total – proving that although she's now one of the veterans of the sport, she's still the woman to beat.
