In 2012, Murray Loubser moved with his family from the big-city lights of Cape Town to the sleepy little village of Gansbaai, a few hours up the coast of South Africa. Known more for its great white sharks and kelp beds than bike infrastructure, Gansbaai is not what you’d call a hotbed of action-sports talent. Yet it was here that Murray started riding BMX, learned to build ramps and honed the effortless style he’s become known for.
In recent years, he’s grown into the most innovative BMX street rider in South Africa. Meet him in the street, though, and you’ll be greeted with an unassuming smile and humble demeanour – he has zero attitude and just wants to ride. What does he ride? Anything, really, from street to dirt jumps, and park. He’ll tell you he’s not a park rider and doesn’t much care for competitions, but he still managed to win the coveted Ghetto Jam title in 2015.
Murray credits Wayne Reiche – SA BMX legend, trail builder extraordinaire and photographer – as a mentor and believes he wouldn’t be where he is if it wasn’t for Reiche’s guidance. “He’s influenced me a lot in my riding and always takes me to the spots and shows me around,” he says. “Wayne’s trail-building philosophies and riding ethics have rubbed off on me.”
Aside from competitions, Loubser’s big goals are to ride some rad new spots and lay it all down on film. When he’s not riding a big stair-set or rail somewhere, you can find him surfing the reef breaks around his hometown.
