Creating, not competing, is Brage Vestavik's mountain biking mantra. 'B-Rage' might have started out on the tried and tested path of downhill racing, but going big outside of the race tapes was always the Norwegian's true passion. "That was the way things went in Norway. You had to compete, but I wanted to do my own thing. Build tracks, film, be creative," explains the native of Mysen.
It was with his freeriding skills that Brage shot to real fame in 2021, thanks to his winning contribution to the X Games Real MTB video competition, a gnarly edit that showcased his fearless riding style on the very trails where he learned his skills as a youngster.
"We chose to film at Hafjell Bike Park, where I rode for the first time when I was seven-years-
old and where I've ridden every year since. Some of the trails there are the same as when I first tried them and they mean a lot to me."
The big draw about Brage's Real MTB video was the fact he designed obstacles that seemed impossible to ride before showing the world that he's got the chops to conquer them. So, the next step for the Norwegian's burgeoning freeride career was always going to be a shot at Red Bull Rampage the following year. Unfortunately, he dislocated his shoulder and sustained multiple fractures to his humerus during practice for freeride mountain biking’s biggest competition in the Utah badlands..
After a period of recuperation, Brage decided to pivot his career away from competition and began focusing on achieving different big MTB milestones in the form of innovative and pioneering videos.
A standout appearance shredding Chile's Andean peaks in 2024's feature-length film ANYTIME proved Brage's serious big mountain skills and now he's gone even bigger with his new project Planet Alaska, shredding unridden slopes deep in the ranges normally associated with snowboarding and freeski video classics. "It's a journey through the Alaskan mountains. It's about exploring and going a little deeper. It's about finding new lines never ridden before and being free, disconnected from the world."
Incredibly, Brage shot Planet Alaska whilst suffering from two prolapsed discs in his back, which he underwent successful surgery for in the autumn of 2024. Now back to full fitness, there's a world of massive mountains out there for Brage to explore and it's safe to say he won't disappoint.
"I want to create content that's timeless," he says. "I want people to be able to watch my videos again in 10 years and for the content to still be cool. I don't want it to be just another piece of content you watch and then forget about."
