Last year, during a condensed four-stop season, the 36-year-old pushed two of the sport’s heavyweights all the way to the final dive in the fight for the King Kahekili Trophy, eventually finishing in third place overall behind champion Gary Hunt and Constantin Popovici. Along the way, he secured a memorable victory in Polignano a Mare as well as two podium finishes at the World Aquatics High Diving World Championships and World Cup.
The proud holder of two World Series firsts – an armstand dive directly of the cliffs and a perfect armstand dive, both executed at Downpatrick Head in Ireland in 2021 – Gimeno’s career has gone from strength to strength in recent years.
From wildcard to title challenger
Having debuted in 2018, a second-place finish in Boston in 2023 finally gave him his first-ever podium, before a sensational victory in Mostar saw him become only the third man to win as a wildcard. He rounded out the season with third place in Auckland; a result which secured him the same position on the overall podium.
In 2024, now with a permanent place on the tour, Gimeno continued to perform at a high level. He narrowly missed out on victory at the season opener in Athens and the final stop in Sydney, and only once found himself outside the top five places at an event, ultimately finishing in fourth place overall.
Describing his ethos as ‘work, consistency and discipline’, Gimeno will put those values at the front of his mind when he attempts to take the next step this year. Having finally tasted the thrill of a title fight last season, his goal in 2026 will certainly be to lay his hands on the coveted King Kahekili Trophy for the first time.
