From a young age, Sam Hurley had two dreams: to emulate his older brothers and to touch the sky with his own wings.
Growing up in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Sam found inspiration in his family, particularly from his older brother, Hootie, who competed in pole vault. At nine years old, Sam's parents saw his natural talent, prompting them to enroll him in competitive track and field.
Paving his own path, Sam became a dual discipline track and field athlete, mastering both high jump and pole vault with style and grace – an uncommon feat in the world of track and field. At 13, Sam soared to victory at the Hershey Nationals in Chicago, realising he had a gift and it was possible for him to have a future career in the sport.
"It's a lot of hard work, discipline and time; you have to love it - it’s something where if you don’t appreciate and enjoy it, then there’s no way to be successful," Sam says of his dual discipline career.
Since starting at the University of Texas in Austin (UT), Sam has continued to shatter his personal best heights and etch his name amongst the legends of UT's track and field history, securing a spot in the all-time top 10 high jumpers. In 2023, he ascended to new heights by earning USTFCCCA Outdoor Second Team All-American honors in high jump – and he’s just getting started.
Beyond the track, Sam is a true adventurer at heart, trying adrenaline-pumping activities such as wakeboarding, skateboarding, surfing, skydiving and various motorsports. Outside of the sports world, Sam has an interest in fashion, having previously walked in New York Fashion week, and loves fishing and golfing.
With an adventurous spirit and a relentless drive, Sam Hurley is not just aiming for the sky; he’s ready to break through it.
