Born on the island of Réunion, near Madagascar, to a French father and a British mother, Txema Mazet-Brown was introduced to snow as a toddler. Spending his winters in France under the watchful gaze of his dad, François – an experienced skier, snowboarder and mountain guide – he developed fast.

At the age of three, Txema and family emigrated to New Zealand, where he would continue to hone his ski skills on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, before starting out on a snowboard when he was nine. Before long, he was taking part in local competitions, and doing well, even competing in New Zealand's Junior Snowboard Freestyle Championships at Wanaka.
