Born in 1999 to a skateboarding father, Yuto Horigome was exposed to skate culture right from the very earliest stages of his life and became a regular fixture at Tokyo’s Murasaki Sports Skatepark.
Having first stepped on a board at six, he quickly became immersed in skate culture and by the age of 18 made the decision to move to skateboarding's epicentre in California, USA, to pursue his dream.
Breakthrough and rapid rise on the skate scene
Yuto's breakthrough on the international competition scene came in 2017, and his rise was rapid. He went on to win major events across Street League Skateboarding, X Games and Tampa Pro, while also claiming the 2021 World Skate Street World Championship.
Contests may fuel the careers of today's skateboarders, but video parts remain an important part of skateboarding culture and legacy. Alongside his success in competitions, Yuto has remained active on the filming front, releasing parts with brands including Spitfire, April Skateboards and Nike SB.
Gold on the biggest stage of all – twice
The ultimate prize emerged in 2020, when Yuto became an Olympic gold medallist in his hometown of Tokyo, establishing his status as the standout figure in the global skateboarding scene.
Expected to defend his title three years later in Paris, his path to the Games was far from straightforward. After struggling for results through much of the qualification cycle, Yuto arrived at the final qualifier event in Budapest with his title defence in jeopardy.
He responded by winning the contest and securing his place in Paris. A month later, with one final attempt remaining in the final, he landed a nollie 270 bluntslide for a score of 97.08, jumping from seventh place to first to retain his title.
Yuto continued adding to his medal collection in 2025, winning men's Skateboard Street gold at X Games Salt Lake City.
Having claimed every major title and captivated millions, Yuto is undoubtedly one of skateboarding's true superstars. That is seen in the fact that his influence extends well beyond contests, with his skill and style continually pushing the progression of the sport.
