Fast-rising Mumbai rapper Divine – an integral member of India's 'gully boys' scene of homegrown MCs and producers – has released a new music video for his single, One Side. Shot in a day in an abandoned tobacco factory in Mumbai, the video, which he made with Red Bull Music, features Divine's Gully Gang crew as well as Pavan Rap from Kings Unlimited.
"The idea was to create something that’s visually different from what I’ve done in the past, while retaining the overall feel of my previous videos,” says Divine, whose real name is Vivian Fernandes. “I think the dark end really reflects the theme of the track."
One Side arrives a year after Divine's massive Farak track, which even Stormzy loved, and includes everything we've come to expect from DIVINE songs – hard-hitting lyrics and plenty of shade thrown at those who still don’t believe in him.
“It’s a track that I dedicate to my fans and the entire hip-hop community in India – we’re all on one side,” he says.
With his music featuring on the popular Indian Netflix series Sacred Games, Divine, who cites Kojo Funds and Kanye West among his influences, has got his sights set on breaking through internationally. One Side is the next step.
