EA Sports FC isn’t just about Ultimate Team and online competition. For many players, it’s also an opportunity to manage a career at their favourite club – or any other club that takes their fancy.
In FC 27, however, this part of the game is set to undergo a particularly large number of changes. EA is overhauling player development, the transfer market, the behaviour of AI-controlled clubs and several other elements that have, for years, contributed to how quickly the career mode became predictable.
With plenty of new features to explore, we’ve rounded up the most important updates in one place. Here’s everything you need to know.
01
Dynamic player ratings in FC 27 Career Mode
This is probably the biggest and most revolutionary change. From this year onwards, players’ ratings in Career Mode will fluctuate much more frequently, better reflecting their current form in matches. In FC 27, the overall rating will no longer be based solely on a player’s base skills and long-term development.
Three factors will primarily influence this rating: form, morale and match fitness – that is, a player’s readiness to start a match. So, if your player performs well on a regular basis, is happy with his situation and remains in good physical condition, his overall rating may increase. Conversely, a run of poor performances, injuries, poor physical condition or general dissatisfaction may have the opposite effect.
Importantly, this system will not apply solely to the player-managed team, but also to other teams.
Of course, this doesn't mean an average player can become a world-class star in just a few months. The dynamic overall rating will also be linked to long-term potential, making the change more noticeable in young prospects than experienced veterans. As a result, the same player could develop very differently across two separate careers.
02
How player potential and development work in FC 27
This is a change that, in essence, had to go hand in hand with the dynamic overall rating. In FC 27, a player’s potential will no longer be such a rigid indicator of where they will be in a few seasons’ time.
The game will feature six different development profiles which will determine, amongst other things, the pace of progress, the point at which a player reaches their peak and their subsequent decline. So, one player might burst onto the scene at a very young age, another might continue to develop well past the age of 25, and yet another might remain at their peak for much longer.
Added to this is dynamic potential. Here, as with overall ratings, a player’s on-pitch form will influence his future development. Consistently exceeding expectations can raise his long-term ceiling, whilst a prolonged run of poor performances can halt his progress.
The role of the coaching staff will also change. The coaches you employ will no longer be responsible solely for improving players’ attributes. One of their tasks will now also be to forecast the potential of the players under their care.
Here, too, the quality of the staff member will be crucial. A better coach will assess a player’s development potential with greater accuracy and higher probability.
The updates certainly get the seal of approval from Polish gaming and football content creator, PLKD: "Although I’m a FUT player, I honestly believe the Career Mode looks the most promising this year.".

How transfers have changed in FC 27 Career Mode
The transfer market will also undergo a major revolution. From now on, it will bear much closer resemblance to how real clubs compete for players.
In FC 27, negotiations will no longer be a quick exchange of a few offers. Instead, a transfer will become a process spread out over time and divided into several stages.
First, you’ll need to send an enquiry to the club or the player themselves to check whether a transfer is even possible. Only after receiving consent will the actual negotiations begin, conducted in parallel between the interested parties.
And even reaching an agreement does not necessarily mean the end of the talks. If, in the meantime, another club enters the race for the player, the seller or the player himself may return with new demands, leading to a renegotiation of the terms.
As a result, a transfer that initially seemed like a mere formality may suddenly turn into a bidding war or fall through entirely.
There will also be more tools at your disposal during the negotiations themselves. The transfer fee can be paid in instalments, part of the sum can be offered in the form of bonuses, or a player can be offered in exchange.
Significant changes are also in store for the players’ contracts themselves. As well as salary and contract length, you'll now be able to negotiate bonuses for appearances, goals, assists and clean sheets, amongst other things. Automatic pay rises following promotion or qualification for European competitions will be possible, as will salary reductions in the event of sporting failure.
And finally, it’s worth noting that EA has also changed the way players’ values are determined. The new model was developed in collaboration with TransferRoom and their xTV system, and players’ prices are set to fluctuate throughout their careers, taking into account factors such as form and the level of the league. A brilliant season can therefore significantly boost a player’s value, whilst a poorer one might mean he’s up for grabs for next to nothing.
04
Smarter AI clubs and transfers in FC 27
EA also promises significant improvements to the AI this year, which should result in much more realistic behaviour from computer-controlled clubs.
From now on, these teams are to have a long-term vision and adapt their strategy in the transfer market and when building their squad accordingly. Clubs prioritising youth development will focus primarily on unearthing young gems from the market, whilst others will seek short-term reinforcements at bargain prices.
The AI will also take players’ current form into account, rather than just their ratings and value. From now on, players who can boast impressive statistics over the course of the season will be able to expect far more offers.
The style preferred by the manager will also be a key factor. Clubs are to look for players who are a better fit for a particular manager’s style of play, rather than simply those with the highest rating in a given position.
Relationships between clubs are also set to play a much greater role in any negotiations and transfers. Transfers between fierce rivals are set to become a rarity. Even the fact that certain clubs are competing for the same trophies is expected to play a part.
05
Unexpected Events in FC 27 Career Mode
This year, players can also expect increased unpredictability, driven by an expanded Unexpected Events system. EA lists, amongst other things, sudden injuries, penalty points for financial difficulties, internal team conflicts and disciplinary issues, such as arriving late for training.
Importantly, these events won’t always end with a single notification. Some may form a whole chain of cause and effect, and your initial reaction will influence what happens next. One decision may therefore defuse a problem, whilst another may only exacerbate it.
Press conferences will also be linked to this system. They are to take place less frequently, but at more significant moments in the season, and your responses will have a greater impact on the players’ morale, relations in the changing room and the further development of specific situations.
This doesn't mean, however, that during press conferences you'll always be presented with simple ‘good’ and ‘bad’ response options. Sometimes the choice will boil down to whose side you want to take. Defending a single player may improve your relationship with him, but at the same time irritate the rest of the team. Conversely, taking the side of the whole group may have a negative impact on the morale of an individual player.
06
Will FC 27 Career Mode be better?
On paper, then, it's a recipe for a career free from the issues the community has been talking about for years. Players are set to develop in a less formulaic way, transfers are to be more complex and simply more interesting, and the game environment itself is set to surprise the player much more often.
Dynamic overall ratings and the revamped transfer system bring an incredible breath of fresh air
PLKD himself, who makes no secret of the fact that the career mode isn’t usually what fascinates him most about the game, explains more about why he thinks it's the mode to play this year:
“Dynamic overall ratings and the revamped transfer system bring an incredible breath of fresh air. You can tell that this mode is being developed by incredibly passionate people who are committed to making it a playable mode that you can really get hooked on. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for it, because it seems that every career will now be different and unpredictable. I’d love to play a season myself," said the YouTuber.
But will these changes keep Career Mode feeling believable and engaging five or six seasons in? The real test will come when the game launches. For now, the changes appear to be heading in the right direction – the hope is that they can live up to the hype.
