Red Bull Junior Team - About
Isack Hadjar became the most recent Red Bull Junior Team graduate to step onto the Formula 1 grid, joining Liam Lawson at VCARB for the 2025 season. Before them, Honda Formula Dream Project driver Yuki Tsunoda followed in the footsteps of World Champion Max Verstappen into the fastest and most spectacular racing series in the world.
From the moment that the Junior Team was founded in 2001 the objectives were clear and the search for future Formula One World Champions had begun. Hand-picked international talents would receive professional and continuous training in all relevant areas of motorsport following the credo:
Competition from the beginning
All drivers of the Red Bull Junior Team are compelled to work hard from the start and, with their sight set firmly on their big goal: F1, they are under permanent pressure to perform.
Only those drivers who have the implicit talent for a sustainable Formula 1 career are supported. The drivers do not just obtain the motorsports basics by competing in the various racing series. Like all Red Bull athletes, the Juniors are also primed for the physical challenges of racing on an individual basis in the Red Bull Diagnostics & Training Center in Thalgau near Salzburg.

In 2004 Christian Klien became the first Red Bull Junior to enter Formula 1. At Monza in 2008 Sebastian Vettel became the first Red Bull Junior to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

2010 saw Vettel win the Formula One World Driver's Championship becoming the youngest-ever Champion. He repeated the feat in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Max Verstappen claimed his first Formula One World Championship title in 2021, becoming the first Dutch driver to do so. He continued his dominance with back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023, and secured a fourth consecutive crown in 2024, further cementing his place among the sport’s modern greats.

“It was great to get the Team's Championship,” stated the 21-year-old New Zealander. “A shame we didn't take the Driver's title as well, especially for my side of the garage who worked so hard and supported me so completely.”

Jak Crawford, Enzo Fittipaldi, Isack Hadjar, Dennis Hauger, Ayumu Iwasa and Zane Maloney all contested Formula 2. Iwasa, the 22-year-old Japanese, scored 3 victories early in the season. He finished the year 4th in the championship, not everything he had hoped for.
“I wanted to be at the top all the time because it was my second year. Unfortunately, I couldn't do it because, well the season was up and down. We were missing some points compared to others, even from my side, both myself and the team.”

His skill was obvious though and he would move on to Super Formula, following in Lawson's footsteps.
Sebastian Montoya contested F3 and Arvid Lindblad established himself impressively in F4.
Lindblad started the year with the UAE F4 series as a warm-up. Then to Europe and the highly competitive Italian F4. “I wanted to be challenging for the wins every weekend and for the championship at the end of the season, which we did. I surpassed my expectations with the performance that I had, especially at the beginning of the year.”

The 16-year-old Briton admitted that the second half of the year was not as successful. “We had a couple of issues that we weren't quite able to get on top of. That was unfortunate because we had a really good start to the year, a really good first half with a good margin, a buffer in the Italian championship.”
“That we unfortunately lost, we, as a collective, had a really poor performance towards the end of the year and we struggled a lot,” admitted Arvid frankly. He finished the season 3rd in the Italian F4 Championship with 6 victories and 4th in Euro F4.
Shrugging off that disappointment he went to Macau and dominated F4 completely, fastest in Qualifying, winning the Qualifying Race and the Final. “It's so raw, not getting re-asphalted like many of the F1 circuits, Macau keeps the bumps, it's pure, a proper street circuit and I love that, you can feel it, so close to the walls, loved it from my first laps.”
Enzo Deligny contested Spanish F4 and finished the season 4th after 2 victories.

F2 wins for Liam Lawson (4), Ayumu Iwasa (2), Dennis Hauger (2) and Jehan Daruvala (1) put the Red Bull Juniors regularly on the podium but Lawson’s 3rd in the title chase was the closest to the ultimate goal.

In F3 Isack Hadjar was much closer, took 3 wins in the first half of the season and lead the standings early in the second half. Good fortune deserted the Frenchman in the closing races and he finished the year 4th.

Highlights 2021
It was a thrilling year with Liam Lawson moving up to Formula 2 and winning the opening race of the season. Fellow Red Bull Junior Jehan Daruvala also scored 2 wins as did Jüri Vips.

There was greater success in F3 where Jack Doohan and Dennis Hauger fought tooth and nail for the title. Norwegian Hauger scored the first victory in Race 3 the opening weekend in Barcelona, Doohan chased him home.
The following weekend It was Doohan who finished in front of Hauger in Race 3 at Paul Ricard to take his first win and set the stage for a year-long battle.

It was 4 wins a piece at the end but the title went to Hauger who simply had more points.
Ayumu Iwasa, Jak Crawford and Jonny Edgar joined them in F3 and all 3 had solid learning seasons.

Highlights 2020
Yuki Tsunoda stepped up to F2 and was the sensation of the season, in the fight for the title right to the end. Three wins in the year and a stunning final weekend where he took a win and a second secured third in the title chase and his rise to F1 for 2021 as part of Scuderia AlphaTauri.
Jehan Daruvala completed a Junior Team clean sweep of that F2 finale with his single season victory.
Liam Lawson took 3 F3 wins and was very much a contender for the title, finally finishing 5th.
Jonny Edgar and Jak Crawford demonstrated a very strong vein of younger talent with fabulous battles in ADAC F4 and Italian F4 with Edgar snatching the ADAC title by the narrowest of margins over Crawford after 6 wins to Crawford's 5. Edgar took 2 wins on his way to 4th in the Italian series as Crawford also grabbed a pair on his way to 6th.
Jüri Vips had his Super Formula season wrecked by the covid pandemic and only managed a few F2 outings but still secured a podium in Mugello.

Highlights 2019
Jüri Vips won 3 races in FIA F3 as he chased the championship, finally finishing 4th.
Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson thrilled everyone with their incredible drives in F3 and Euroformula. There were times when things went too far but it was clear that these were two exceptional talents evolving. Lawson took 4 Euroformula wins and finished second in the championship, having already won the Toyota Racing Series at home in NZ. Tsunoda had one win in Euroformula and one in FIA F3.
On statistics Dennis Hauger obliterated everyone, winning 12 Italian F4 races on the way to the championship. He missed out on the ADAC F4 title by a narrow margin after 6 wins.

Dan Ticktum repeated his 2017 Macau victory with Motopark and this year totally dominated the event through practice, qualifying, the qualifying race and a final that was restarted several times. He took a fine second in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and also had brief outings in Formula 2 and Super Formula cars.

Jack Doohan and Dennis Hauger went head to head in the British F4 Championship with Norwegian Hauger clinching fourth place by a single point over fellow 15-year-old Doohan in the final round at Brands Hatch but it was Australian Doohan who took the Rookies title.

They both had an impressive results list: Hauger already had four overall victories and Doohan three but the podium haul went the other way, 10 and 12, none of the other Rookies were even close, the Arden drivers certainly made their mark.

Highlights 2017
Dan Ticktum's sensational F3 Macau Grand Prix victory ended the season very much on a high note both for the Briton and the Motopark Team.

He had not got everything from his Formula Renault 2 litre that he wanted, finishing the season seventh overall after one victory. He joined the GP3 championship towards the end of the season, contested 5 races and got on the podium once.

More impressive through the season was Pierre Gasly who learnt the art of communicating his needs to a Japanese team in their Super Formula Series.
The Frenchman got quicker and quicker, might have won the title but took an excellent second and that was enough to secure him a Toro Rosso F1 drive for 2018.

Highlights 2016
An incredible GP2 battle between Red Bull Junior Pierre Gasly and his Prema team mate Antonio Giovinazzi went right down to the wire but it was our 20-year-old Frenchman who was crowned champion. A superb achievement and a fabulous way to bounce back after a frustrating GP2 season in 2015.

At the other end of the experience range Dutch 15-year-old Richard Verschoor totally dominated both the Northern European Zone and Spanish F4 Championships.

2015 NEZ champion Niko Kari joined the Junior Team and moved up to the F3 European Championship. The Finn learnt a great deal and took a victory in Imola but by his own high standards was not thrilled with the season's results, finishing 10th in the title chase.
Brazilian Sérgio Sette Câmara battled alongside Kari in F3, finishing the season 11th and Australian 16-year-old Luis Leeds fought for the British F4 Title, ending the year 3rd.

Highlights 2015
It was never going to be easy to follow the incredible 2014 season and by comparison it was a frustrating year. Particularly for Pierre Gasly as the 19-year-old Frenchman clearly had the pace to chase the GP2 title. He was very quick in preseason testing having switched to the Dams team and secured three pole positions through the year, he was also on the podium four times but the win eluded him and eighth in the championship was not a just reward for his skills.

It was a similar tale for British 24-year-old Dean Stoneman who joined the Red Bull Junior Team fresh from an excellent second in GP3 in 2014. He took the Dams seat vacated by Sainz in Formula Renault 3.5. He was quickly on the pace and despite a nasty high speed crash during preseason testing at Jerez he took third in the opening race of the year at Motorland Aragon.
A wonderful second in Monaco and a third and fourth at Spa quickly followed, the wins would surely soon follow.... But they didn't. There was another fine second in Race 1 at the Red Bull Ring, but misfortune, often at the hand of others, disrupted the last races of the year and sixth in the points table did not reflect his ability.
Youngster of the year was 16-year-old Callum Ilott and the Briton was taking his first steps out of a kart. He contested the very competitive FIA Formula 3 European Championship for Carlin and as he learnt the difficult skills of setting up and racing a formula race car he impressed with his abilities. The results did not really show though and he ended the year twelfth.

Highlights 2014
It was a very impressive season with Carlos Sainz Jr. claiming victory in Formula Renault 3.5 in the Dams Dallara-Renault. The 20-year-old Spaniard set a new standard with seven victories and became the youngest driver to win the title. Runner up was fellow Red Bull Junior Pierre Gasly who followed up his 2 litre title from the year before with second in his debut season in the larger category with Arden. The 18-year-old Frenchman only missed out on a race win because of the dominant Sainz but took six runner-up spots and a pair of thirds.
2014 - Sainz at Spa, dominant in Renault 3.5
Gasly had some GP2 outings towards the end of the year but the situation wasn't competitive. GP3 though was very successful for Alex Lynn, the 21-year-old Briton so dominated the early season, right from the preseason tests that he was the solid favourite for most of the year. Five podiums, including two wins, in the first eight races set the stage and he matched skill with consistency to hold the advantage through the second half of the season. He added a third win for good measure and took the title for Carlin.
Max Verstappen joined the Red Bull Junior Team late in the season, he had already set the F3 world alight in his Van Amersfoort Racing Dallara-VW and he added more wins in Red Bull colours. Straight out of karts he was the revelation of the year and, with Sainz, joined Scuderia Toro Rosso for the 2015 F1 season. Daniil Kvyat moved up to Infiniti Red Bull Racing alongside Daniel Ricciardo so that 2015 would see ex juniors filling all four F1 seats.

Highlights 2013
Of the six Red Bull Juniors racing in 2013 it was certainly Daniil Kvyat who made the headlines by winning the GP3 series for MW Arden. That and his pace in his half season of outings in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship led to him getting a Formula One drive with Toro Rosso for 2014, capping a perfect season for the 19-year-old Russian.
2013 - Kvyat takes dominant victory at the end of the season in Abu Dhabi to take title
It was not an easy GP3 season at all as Kvyat and Arden team mate Carlos Sainz Jr. struggled badly at the opening rounds when a setup that would allow the spec tyres to do the distance was illusive. The team overcame the setbacks but it was only a brilliant end of season run by the team and Kvyat that clinched the title at the final round in Abu Dhabi.
Sainz could not match him and a mixture some atrocious luck and overly intense desire to finish in front thwarted the 19-year-old Spaniard. Tenth for the year was not a just reflection of his ability. He had far more fun in his Renault 3.5 outings and shocked the World Series paddock in Monaco by heading the timing sheets almost as soon as he sat in the car last year in free practice and ran fourth in the early stages of the race.
Kvyat's partial, 21 race, F3 season for Carlin resulted in a win, 5 pole positions, 7 podiums and a fastest lap but as a 'guest driver' he did not feature in the points table. Fellow Junior, 19-year-old Briton Tom Blomqvist did the full FIA Formula 3 European Championship season and while it started well enough with podiums in Monza and Hockenheim there were not enough great results in the EuroInternational Dallara-Mercedes and he ended the year 7th in the title chase.
Blomqvist ended the year a frustrated 8th in the F3 Macau grand Prix, just behind Sainz, after stalling his Fortec Dallara-Mercedes on the line in the qualifying race and starting the final at the back of the pack. Second at Macau was fellow Junior and 2012 winner António Félix da Costa driving for Carlin as was Sainz.
For the 22-year-old Portuguese it was a good end to a season that was almost brilliant but ultimately fell short of his goal which was winning the Renault 3.5 Series. He won 3 races for Arden, scored 1 pole position, 6 podiums and 2 fastest laps and that netted him 3rd in the series. He also gained and F1 position at Infiniti Red Bull Racing as one of the team's two test and reserve drivers for 2014.
There were also two Red Bull Juniors competing in the ADAC Formula Masters series, 18-year-old Netherlander Beitske Visser and 17-year-old South African Callan O'Keeffe. They both drove for the Motopark Academy with Visser scoring a single win at the Sachsenring.

Highlights 2012
There were 7 names on the Red Bull Junior ledger during 2012. The season started with Daniil Kvyat (RUS), Carlos Sainz Jr. (ESP), Alex Albon (GBR), Callan O'Keeffe (RSA), Stefan Wackerbauer (GER) and Lewis Williamson (GBR). In June Williamson was replaced by António Félix da Costa (POR) and the newcomer started winning almost immediately.

Showing remarkable skills in a wide variety of circumstances and conditions, Félix da Costa won 3 races in GP3 where he finished 3rd in the championship and took 4 victories in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series to end the year 4th in the points even though he missed the first 5 races. He underlined his skill and versatility with victory in the F3 race at Macau to close the year.
There were plenty of other victories for the Juniors in 2012. The highest scorer was Kvyat with 14 wins in Formula Renault 2.0. He contested both the Eurocup where 7 victories took him to 2nd place and the Alps series where another 7 wins gave him the title.
Sainz took wins in F3 with 4 victories in the British Formula 3 Championship on his way to 6th in the championship. He was also 9th in the Formula 3 Euro Series and 5th in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship.
Less experienced Juniors were also winning with O'Keeffe coming home 1st 4 times in the Formula BMW Talent Cup. In all there were Junior Team 30 wins, a total of 48 podium finishes and 19 races started from pole.

Highlights 2011
The Four Red Bull Juniors had a highly successful record in 2011. Carlos Sainz, Jr.. (ESP), Daniil Kvyat (RUS), Jean-Eric Vergne (FRA) and the F1-driver Daniel Ricciardo (AUS) took three series titles and three runner-up places, 26 race victories and 58 podium finishes.
In addition there were 22 pole positions and 33 fastest laps.

In Macau at the end of the season Carlos Sainz, Jr. was the only Red Bull Junior at the legendary and prestigious Formula 3 race. He got the drive thanks to an excellent 5th in his 1st F3 drive in the final round of the F3 Euro Series at Hockenheim.
