Costa Rica doesn't have the longest lineage of surfing stars - but thanks the work of many surfing mentors within the small South American country, it's not short of rising stars, either.
Carlos Muñoz is one such surfing prodigy, born in Nicaragua in 1993 before his family made a permanent move to neighbouring Costa Rica when Carlos was just 2 years old. Raised in a country with hundreds of miles of coastline, Carlos was never short of opportunities to excel on the water, and has since gone on to garner a name for himself and his arsenal of aerial variations within the international surfing community.
Surfing magazine has described the young athlete as "a Costa Rican teenager with his fingers on the pulse of the good life", and Surfer Today simply refer to him as "the flying Costa Rican." But who is he really? To find out, take a look at Volcom's edit below, taken from a series that explores the up-and-coming talents expected to emerge as the next generation of surfing professionals.
