The generation-defining film is now streaming on Red Bull TV
Everything was different in 2009. Grungier. Louder. Riskier. A lot more fun. We're of course talking about Kai Neville's film of that year, Modern Collective, which officially ushered in a new era of surfing and surf film-making.
The film starred the world's most unconventional surfers at the time: Dane Reynolds, Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol, Mitch Coleburn, Dusty Payne, and Jordy Smith. It also starred some of the world's most unconventional waves, at least in terms of what had been defined as perfect in the previous two decades. Onshore winds were suddenly preferred over offshore. Dawn patrol was shelved in favor of all-nighters. The rules weren't rewritten, they were just thrown out the door.
It's hard to believe it's been eight years since then 24-year-old Neville unleashed Modern Collective on the world, but despite all that's happened in surfing since then, the film is as relevant and raucous as ever. That's why it's now streaming in its entirety on RedBullTV. So, go get it now – it's worth every second of pumping reminiscence.
