The indie Switch characters who need their own Nintendo amiibo

Shovel Knight was just the start for Nintendo's amiibo licensing program and we want these official figurines, from Golf Story stars to Yooka and Laylee.

With Yacht Club Games delivering one of the first non-Nintendo produced amiibo in Shovel Knight (and more on the way), it seems the gloves are off and Nintendo is now open to letting other teams have a crack at prized properties.
Speaking of prized properties, we're big fans of amiibo. In fact, we have a bit of an obsession with them and while there are more amiibo than ever coming directly from Nintendo, these are the indie figurines we'd love to see alongside them on shop shelves.

Yooka and Laylee (Yooka-Laylee)

While it may not be the best game ever made, you'd have to agree that Yooka-Layleehas lots of whimsical characters that'd make great figurines. We've gone for the main characters here, in a two-piece set, but you could easily release Trowzer (the snake) or even bad guy Capital B (a bee). In fact, all of the zany creations in Yooka-Laylee would look great as amiibo.

Dusty and Piper (Figment)

Although Figment's not yet available on Switch, we know (or at least, hope) it's coming, and that it's a fantastic action adventure game. Playable protagonist character Dusty, we’re not entirely sure what Dusty is – perhaps he's a man in a costume. Regardless, he's a warrior of courage no longer required due to a time of peace, until he's tasked with fighting off ghastly embodiments of the effects of poor mental health. What is clear, though, is that he looks cool and would make a fantastic statue, along with his chirpy bird-friend, Piper.

Super Meat Boy (Super Meat Boy)

Tell us you don't want him on your shelf

Once upon a time, if you said "SMB" to people in a gaming context, they'd assume you were talking about Super Mario Bros, but Super Meat Boy is one of the best platformers ever made and has earned the right to share that acronym. Meat Boy himself is perfectly at home on the Switch, with Super Meat Boy Forever coming in 2018, meaning the timing is perfect to release amiibo for the game. While we're at it, how about a Bandage Girl and Dr. Fetus model, too?

Isaac (The Binding of Isaac)

At the risk of looking like Edmund McMillen superfans (one of the duo behind Super Meat Boy, and the creator of The Binding of Isaac), we desperately want an amiibo based on this game. In fact, others want it too, having gone so far as to create a mockup of an Isaac amiibo and even a Joy-Con. Looks good, right? We need this, now.

10 years in the making, the least we could do is buy an amiibo

Taking over 10 years to develop, it's no wonder that Owlboy harks back to an era of games we all have a fondness for. This is a Metroidvania-style game with beautiful art, but importantly for us, has multiple characters who would make great amiibo. The main character himself (Owlboy, unsurprisingly) has plenty of detail and is high on our wish list to get the amiibo treatment, perhaps when the game hits Switch in February 2018. It'd be great to see his wings have some kind of different material, in the same way the Metroid amiibo had a squishy feel.

Wonder Boy (Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap)

Oh boy, could Nintendo ever make a mint out of Wonder Boy from amiibo collectors. Starting as the titular Wonder Boy (or girl), this is a game that transforms you, via a curse, into a dragon, a tiny mouse and more. Can you imagine a large amiibo set in the same style that the Breath of the Wild champions were released in? While Wonderboy may be a Master System game rejigged for modern consoles, the colourful designs would look lovely on our shelves.

Dorothy (SteamWorld Dig 2)

A great new Metroidvania, and a classic amiibo in the making?

Dorothy's a fantastic character and SteamWorld Dig 2 is a terrific Metroidvania, but the reason we want her as an amiibo is simple: she looks cool. Dorothy is colourful, unique – the retro style could make the amiibo look really interesting – and has some nice detailing that would make a top quality amiibo.

Lumo (Lumo)

Looking a bit like Vivi from Final Fantasy IX, the main character from Lumo is a mysterious looking fellow, but with his cool hat and glowing cane we think this would be a nice amiibo for shelves. Nintendo made their Boo ghost amiibo glow in the dark after being exposed to light for a while, and it'd be nice to see Lumo's torch light up in some way.
