The incident occurred on Friday morning, 9.2km into the 20.68km Saint-Clement-sur-Durance to Freissinieres stage, as Tänak's Hyundai i20 WRC left the tarmac at high speed and slammed into rocks by the side of the road before rolling down a steep incline.
Both Tänak and Jarveoj exited the wrecked car unaided, and according to the Hyundai team were "fine" after being taken to hospital for medical checks and observation. Tänak later tweeted: 'It wasn’t the start of the season that we were looking for, but fortunately we are both okay thanks to the safety equipment'.
At the end of the first full day of the Monte Carlo Rally, Toyota's Sébastien Ogier snatched top spot from team-mate Elfyn Evans on Stage 8 to lead by 1.2 seconds. Hyundai's Thierry Neuville is third, 6.4 seconds off the overall lead.
