Patrick Dempsey may have left Grey’s Anatomy but the actor turned racing driver is now working on a new television project that also combines his love of motorsport.
“2015 is a year of development for me,” claims the American, who now races in the GT class of the World Endurance Championship. “I’m working on new projects, both in racing and acting/producing – this is the direction I want to go.”
Dempsey’s new project is about the tragic story of Ferrari driver Wolfgang von Trips, who was heading towards the 1961 Formula One World Championship before he died during the season finale at Monza.
We want to tell the story of these men and their lives in a TV series.
“It’s based on the book The Limit, which describes the championship fight between Phil Hill and [Wolfgang] Berghe von Trips in 1961,” explains Dempsey. “We want to tell the story of these men and their lives in a TV series, but we still have a long way to go.
“The female protagonist is based on a real person: Denise McCluggage, who was a really good reporter and an excellent driver. The series shows her relationship with the other drivers.”
Dempsey’s Grey’s Anatomy character was famously killed off earlier this year, allowing him to focus further on his passion for motor racing.
“My kids are the love of my life, but racing is right up there,” says Dempsey. “It is really challenging. I relish that you recognise progress with every single race, which could lead to a great leap forward and bring you closer towards the goal of winning.”
This year, driving for his own team Dempsey-Proton Racing, the American finished second in his class at the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours.
