These are the PUBG Xbox One achievements we want to see

With the biggest game of 2017 finally coming to Xbox One, we’ve been thinking about what the achievements might be.

It’s a simple concept: 100 people jump out of a plane onto an island full of weapons, armour and vehicles, and fight it out to be the last one standing. A circle closes around all players, pushing them towards a central point to keep things moving, and carnage ensues. It’s become every streamer’s go-to game, patch notes are dissected to understand every weapon’s specific statistics and code is analysed to discover future secrets yet unannounced.
Yet with the phenomenon finally hitting Xbox One via the game preview programme on December 12, we’ve been thinking about achievements. In the past, games like Dead Rising have made the Xbox achievements system really sing, getting us to play in ways we hadn’t thought about before, and PUBG seems ripe for a return to form if done right. Aside from the obvious achievements like “win a match” that’ll make up the rest of the 1,000 gamerscore, here’s what we think might make the cut when the game finally hits Xbox.

Out of the frying pan, into the fire (100G)

It’s become a meme in its own right and the subject of much speculation and study throughout the early access period: we’re talking of course, about the frying pan. We think there might be an achievement in the Xbox version of PUBG related to deflecting a bullet with the frying pan. It might be as specific as “save a life using the frying pan”, which would mean you’d be on a sliver of health, but save yourself either by defeating an enemy with the pan, or the aforementioned deflection of bullets using it. But make no mistake, there will be something in there about frying pans and it’ll probably be a rare one, too.

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater (75G)

If you’ve played PUBG before, you’ll know that part of the learning curve requires you to hide out in a bathtub and wait for the numbers to thin out before getting too involved. This achievement will likely be a nod to the number of streamers who speak in hushed tones as they hide away from the more aggressive type of PUBG player. They’ve grabbed a gun or two, armoured up and are hiding, hoping for their chicken dinner the easy way. It’s almost a passive way to play, but we think there’ll be some form of achievement related to spending more time hiding in a bath than traversing the map and you can be sure we’ll be getting this one ourselves, too.

Naked and famous (75G)

Think of this as a hardcore achievement. You start in your pants with no armour or weapons, and while you can grab something to defend yourself with, this one requires you to end the match dressed the same as you began it. That means avoiding snipers who’ll headshot you very easily, and shying away from massive firefights. You just have to stealthily work your way inside the circle and be the last one alive. Challenging!

Circle the wagons, we’re under attack (50G)

A simple one, but we think there’ll be multiple vehicle-based achievements and one will be for defeating an enemy while driving your car or motorbike, or even boat, outside of the circle. This means you’ll be taking constant damage (but so will your opponent), and will be panicked, making for some madcap moments ending in someone’s defeat. Maybe this one will even tie into the first-person servers, if they make it onto Xbox One at some point, too. Make sure defeat isn’t yours if you want this achievement.
Let's take a moment to enjoy the trailer for PUBG on XBox One:

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a.... (75G)

There have been some utterly baffling things happening with the physics engine in PUBG. For example, we’ve seen people ramp high into the air on a motorbike, get off the bike and gracefully mount the balcony of a house, before shotgunning to victory. We think that might be a bit much for most people, but that doesn’t mean that hitting a moving target won’t be an achievement. Whether it’s sniping someone as they drive away, or shooting them out of the air as they jump on a bike, it’s going to happen, and the chuckles shall be loud.

What’s that coming over the hill? (100G)

A simple, but challenging achievement, we think there'll be 100 gamerscore points on the line for the elite snipers of the world. People on PC are already nailing shots of over 1,000m, so we’d expect that to be the benchmark (or around there, at least) you’ll need to clear in order to unlock the points. This will require dedication and many, many games. Remember, you don’t respawn, so every time you aim for unlocking one of these achievements it can go well, or very badly, incredibly quickly.

Sepia tones while defending your homes (50G)

Another of the tactics you can employ to be successful in PUBG is to find a good house that’s easy to defend, and hole up waiting for the circle to shrink around you. In a homage to classic movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, we think a good old fashioned “survive a shoot-out and defend your base” style achievement would work well, especially for the teams mode. As a car pulls up with two or three enemies, you have to defend your home, and make it out alive. Pop! 50Gs are yours along with an enormous amount of satisfaction.

Winner Winner, Never (a) Sinner (200G)

Instead of getting spicy and going in guns blazing, this achievement will require you to win the match without ever getting a kill. This is the ultimate test of skill and patience. It'll likely require you to get a vehicle, and be incredibly aware of everything going on around you. You’ll need to run if anyone engages you (hence the vehicle being helpful), you’ll need bandages if you get hit, and you’ll need luck. The circle will eventually close on you and attempt to force you into combat, but a stray grenade may be your opponent’s undoing, leaving you with clean hands and the ultimate in victory. If you get this, uninstall the game: you’re done, you’ve achieved the pinnacle of PUBG and no chicken dinner will ever taste as good after.
