Roger Vieira claims back-to-back wins at Red Bull Genova Cerro Abajo
Roger Vieira’s victory on a fast and technical course in northwest Italy means the Red Bull Cerro Abajo title will be decided at the final event of the season in Germany.
The third edition of Red Bull Genova Cerro Abajo once again delivered a tightly contested battle as the world’s very best urban downhill riders tackled a physically demanding course through the historic streets of Genoa, Italy.
On a course that rewarded precision, commitment and race craft in equal measure, it was defending champion Roger Vieira of Brazil that emerged victorious in a tense battle that was decided by fine margins. Germany’s Johannes Fischbach banked second place with another strong run, while Spain’s Alex Marín completed the podium.
The result in Genoa means the Red Bull Cerro Abajo season remains in the balance, with Vieira closing the gap to leader Sebastian Holguín, who triumphed earlier this year at Red Bull Valparaíso Cerro Abajo. That series title will now be decided when riders head to the final stop in the world series in Stuttgart, Germany, on September 5-6.

Riders were pushed to the limits as they went all-in for victory in the historic port city of Genoa. Hosting the world’s best urban downhill MTB riders for the third time, this year's course was one of the most demanding in the series.
The 2.2km-long course dropped nearly 280m and featured constantly changing surfaces. It started from Monte Peralto and finished in front of a huge crowd at Largo della Zecca. Between those two points, riders had to navigate steep gradients, narrow alleyways, intimidating stair sections and rapidly changing surfaces.
Seeing riders hit speeds of up to 80kph between jumps, steps and bends in Genoa's maze of creuze and Caruggi (the old town's narrow streets), provided a memorable spectacle, thrilling both riders and spectators alike.
It was 31-year-old Vieira who delivered a flawless ride to once again take the title with a winning time of 2m 33.971s. "I had a really good run in the qualies; I didn't want to see Johannes' time at the top, but I ended up watching and saw his time and knew I had to give everything I had," said the Brazilian. "That's what I did, and it worked. I'm so happy to win again. Back-to-back win in Genova, this is for Brazil."

The closely fought battle at the top of the standings saw Fischbach finish just 1.659s behind Vieira. It was an important result for the German rider as he now moves up into fourth position in the overall standings and will be determined to end his season in style with victory in front of a home crowd in Germany.
In a tight contest for the last podium spot, Spain's Marín took third place ahead of Swiss rider Tuhoto-Ariki Pene. The best-placed Italian rider was Francesco Colombo in 13th position.
