Red Bull Rampage: Zablotny claims debut win, Goomes defends crown
Red Bull Rampage 2025 was a thrilling showdown between veterans and newcomers, with experience winning the women's contest, while a brand-new name took the top step in the men's comp.
There's no such thing as a guarantee at Red Bull Rampage. Veterans may have the experience and expertise, but a newcomer can easily shake things up. One athlete may have an expansive bag of tricks, but another may unlock the most daunting feature of the day. Winners are crowned when the last rider rolls through the finish corral, and this year’s was no exception in the men’s contest at Red Bull Rampage 2025.
After two intense rounds of competition, rookie Hayden Zablotny emerged victorious, becoming the first newcomer to win since Brandon Semenuk’s triumph in 2008. After making a mistake on his first, Zablotny linked together the most daunting run of the day, while stomping seven tricks. Rounding out the rest of the podium was Thomas Genon in second place and Tom Van Steenbergen in third.
Who is Red Bull Rampage winner Hayden Zablotny?
Zablotny’s victory didn’t come without a fight. Challenges are part of the deal with Red Bull Rampage and Mother Nature was especially fickle this year. Rain and wind hammered the venue during practice, producing some of the toughest conditions in the contest's history. Skies ultimately cleared closer to finals day, and the athletes persevered, descending the venue with precision and technical tricks.
Rising like a natural amphitheatre, the 2025 venue is a familiar one. It hosted the 2016/17/21 events, and blends big mountain terrain with features for huge tricks. This course is a favourite among athletes and fans alike and has been ground zero for countless history-making moments. These cliffs, chutes and jumps have redefined freeride mountain biking with each visit, and during finals, the 17 riders added their mark to the mountain.
"I just wanted to build something that would showcase my building and riding style", Zablotny said. "Something I’d be stoked on riding as well." Five years ago, 22-year-old Zablotny made the pivot from downhill racing to freeride after competing at Tom Van Steenbergen’s slopestyle event. Once he learned his first backflip, he was hooked. Red Bull Rampage became a natural goal for him as he loves both riding and digging.
It isn’t easy being a rookie, especially at a venue that’s hosted three Red Bull Rampage competitions. Most of the features are claimed by the veteran riders, and there isn’t much real estate for new ideas. Determined to find his own unique way down the mountain, Zablotny built an entirely new top section. His entrance was one of the most difficult features on the mountain: a committing double drop that required 100 percent precision.

How did Hayden Zablotny win Red Bull Rampage?
Zablotny's first run started well, rode his terrifying upper section with ease, linking together what was looking like a solid performance. His momentum came to a halt with a small error on his transfer step-up. The crash meant it would all come down to his second run. “I was trying to stay as calm as possible and keep my nerves under control,” explains Zablotny.
Dropping in, he repeated the run, flowing through the committing top section - regarded as one of the toughest features on course. The step-up that originally thwarted him was no issue the second go around. Descending the mountain, he unveiled the tricks: flatspin, nac nac, one foot tabletop, backflip, 360, suicide no-hander and a flatspin. The judges rewarded him with a 96.00, launching him into the top spot. He’d have an agonising wait for the rest of the second runs to know if it would hold. The score was unshakeable, earning Zablotny his first Red Bull Rampage victory.
Finishing 1.65 points behind Zablotny on 94.35, Red Bull Rampage veteran Genon of Belgium scored his first-ever podium in his 12th apperance. After losing points for running off his line during run one, he rebounded by landing a 360 on exceptionally exposed first drop – one of the biggest tricks of the day – to start his second run and rode a fast, stylish line to score his first podium after three fifth-place finishes in previous years.
Genon said: "I realised that the first spin drop was going to be the point decider. I had one more trick in mind and I didn’t pull the trigger because I didn’t want to throw it all away. It’s cliché, but I’ve been working at this for so long and started to think I probably wouldn’t get a podium. I advise everyone to keep pushing."

New Zealand’s defending Red Bull Rampage champion dropped into Utah's desert cliffs with a run that impressed both judges and fans alike.
Building on the momentum from last year’s inaugural women’s Red Bull Rampage, the world’s top female freeriders returned to south-west Utah’s rugged desert cliffs this week, ready to drop in.
Defending champion Robin Goomes made it two wins from two appearances at the second women’s edition of Red Bull Rampage, delivering a standout run featuring two backflips and suicide no-handers on a highly exposed line on Friday in Virgin, Utah.
Goomes delivered a standout run that secured her place in freeride history, as the world's top female mountain bikers carved creative new lines and redefined what’s possible on the desert cliffs.
"I was really proud of my first run", Goomes said. "The main goal is to ride your run well. Obviously, I wanted to win, but all you can do is ride your best and if you can do that, you have a good chance."
As mentioned above, the athletes here had battled through some of the toughest weather in the competition's history. Rain and wind cut down precious practice time, ultimately pushing the event out a day. Still, the riders rose to the challenge, demonstrating why they’re the world’s best.

The seven riders who dropped in for finals took the level up considerably compared to the first year's competition, both in terms of the lines built and the riding they delivered. "This terrain has so much opportunity for creative riding," said runner-up Hannah Bergemann. "It's amazing to see how far women's freeride has come and to be part of this second Red Bull Rampage women's competition feels surreal."
Bergemann, who made her Red Bull Rampage debut after missing the 2024 event through injury, backflipped a big double jump at the bottom of the course to come up just short of Goomes's winning score, but secured second place and the athlete-voted McGazza Spirit Award.
"The score was so tight I felt like I needed to try any little thing to change the score. I'm still so happy with how I rode and how everyone rode. My goal is completed and it’s a cherry on top to be on the podium," said the 29-year-old Oregon native.
