The big wave Peahi, better known as Jaws, has captivated the imaginations of humans around the world for well over a decade now. When a big North Pacific storm sends swell to the famed wave, on the island of Maui, Hawaii's north shore, there's bound to be an elite crew of big-wave surfers there to meet it.
Each year, however, it's the local crew that stand out, session after terrifying, history-making season. The film Nervous Laughter, from Take Shelter Productions, goes inside a historic season at Jaws with these local watermen, following them through the trials of injury, friendship, competition, and triumph.
In addition to recounting the history of surfing at Jaws, Nervous Laughter takes a deep dive into the friendships of renowned locals Albee Layer, Matt Meola, Dege O’Connell, Billy Kemper, and Kai Lenny, along with fellow Hawaiians and big-wave surfers Torrey Meister, Shane Dorian, Laird Hamilton, Dava Kalama, and John John Florence.
Focusing on the historic 2015-16 El Niño season, Nervous Laughter peels back the layers of these surfers' unbreakable friendship, fearlessness, competitiveness, and camaraderie in the face of some of the biggest, most perfect Jaws conditions ever seen.
