Engine
The EXC based motor is fitted with a close ratio six-speed gearbox for Hard Enduro events and a five-speed SX gearbox for Endurocross. The style of power for Endurocross is similar to a motocross bike – snappier, quicker building – and is achieved by different carburettor settings and the fitment of a different exhaust system, with some adjustments to the power valve and cylinder.
The Hard Enduro bike has a softer power delivery and uses a standard carb’ and exhaust pipe. Both bikes use an aftermarket S3 cylinder head for better cooling and power adjustment. For both Hard Enduro and Endurocross the engine needs to deliver more low-end power, have a greater rev range, while retaining very progressive mid-range performance.
Chassis Using stock EXC frame, which we powder coat orange, we slightly lower the subframe and alter the foot peg position – all changes specifically made to suit riding in rocks and extreme terrain. For Endurocross we use smaller SX fuel tank while for Hard Enduro, where we need a greater range, we use the stock EXC tank.
Suspension
WP 48mm Cone Valve Fork and a Trax shock is what are used for both Hard Enduro and Endurocross. Shock is slightly shorter than standard but the same suspension is used for both disciplines. Only changes are to the ‘clickers’ because for indoor races a much firmer setting is required, more like MX.
Tyres
Metzeler 6 Days Extreme rear tyre and mousse are always used – at all events and in all conditions. Generally for indoor use a harder front tyre is the preferred option, but a two choice of two front tyres is available. Holes are drilled into the mousses to make them even softer, so they work better in rock sections and on logs. In general the demands placed upon tyres are the same for both Hard Enduro and Endurocross.
Other
Many small changes and modifications are made to the bike to help protect it from rock damage, such as Carbon Fibre front disc guards, stronger discs, billet rear disc guard, stronger chain guides, radiator protection, and for extreme events a radiator fan is fitted. For events such as Hell’s Gate a carb’ heater is needed, as is a larger generator and battery unit to power the extra lights for the night stage.
