The stylish AT03 – Scuderia AlphaTauri’s designs for a new F1 era
The new AT03 by Scuderia AlphaTauri is the racing car that highlights the fusion of tech, innovation and style, bonding F1 with Red Bull’s premium fashion brand AlphaTauri.
Always the most eye-catching team on the Formula One grid, Scuderia AlphaTauri came into one of the most hotly anticipated world championship seasons in years with hopes flying high. Following their highest points haul and a sixth-placed finish in 2021, the team from Faenza, Italy, are hoping they have the car, drivers and expertise to deliver some thrilling racing in 2022.
In the cockpit, Grand Prix winner Pierre Gasly goes from strength to strength. 2021 was his best season to date, as he was consistently in the points, and he added a dazzling podium to his trophy cabinet following a spectacular third place in Azerbaijan. “The AT03 looks great with our livery on the race car,” said the Frenchman who wore a classic cream-white seersucker suit for the car launch.
Sweeping rule changes promise a new era of F1 with the cars radically redesigned to bring more action to the track and closer racing between the teams. “Clearly, compared to 2021, it’s a huge change in terms of look, in terms of design. The team had to start from a brand-new page with these new regulations. It is going to be a big change."
Testing starts in Barcelona, Spain, on February 23, and will be the first time the AT03 will share the track with cars from from Oracle Red Bull Racing, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault and Aston Martin. "Once we start testing the AT03, we will have a better idea of our competitiveness and what's possible for this new season," added Gasly. "Obviously, the last two, three years, I've been really improving for AlphaTauri, and personally, I want to keep pushing the team forward and keep getting better results and pushing them to the front of the grid."
There’s a familiar face awaiting the Frenchman on the other side of the garage in the form of team-mate Yuki Tsunoda. Having made an impressive debut in Bahrain and ended the season with his highest finish, Tsunoda is building on a year of F1 experience. Familiarity with the team should help him collect even more points for the Scuderia in 2022.
And Tsunoda cannot wait for the new season to start: “I’m looking forward to being able to overtake more. This year’s car is designed to increase overtaking opportunities and to have cleaner air for the car behind. It’ll be much better for the spectators and also for us to have more battles and closer fighting during the race.”
For the car launch, he chose a 3D knit shirt with matching trousers that fitted his relaxed ‘street style’ for the car launch. “I’m really happy that I’m in the AlphaTauri fashion team,” he added.
According to team principal Franz Tost, continuity with the drivers and the team means AlphaTauri will be well suited to this new era of F1. “I expect the car will be fast because we have a strong team together, we did a lot of work on the mechanical side and as well on the aerodynamics. We have two fantastic drivers: Pierre Gasly is well experienced, and Yuki is in his second year, so I expect a good performance from him. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t have a very strong season.”
For Technical Director Jody Egginton, the person responsible for designing and building the AT03, the new regulations represent a challenge and one where he is relying on his world-class team of engineers, mechanics and drivers to pull together. “The new aero regulations have presented a challenge to all of the teams. It’s a very interesting exercise; the concept of the car is significantly different with the new regulations.
“We won’t know until we hit the ground exactly where we are, but from the work we’ve put in, we think we’ve found some good development directions, and hopefully, that puts us in a good position for the season.”
