The Hahnenkamm race is the most legendary and dangerous event of its kind, and each year the best skiers of the planet meet in Kitzbühel, Austria, to take on the frightening course. They see the Hahnenkamm Mountain’s downhill course, the Streif, as the ultimate challenge, which can be mastered only with perfect technique and extraordinary courage.
You choose a line and then it's a question of surviving. Once you've decided which line to take, there is no turning back.
The Streif is extreme from start to the finish: Mausefalle, Steilhang, Seidl-Alm, Hausbergkante, Traverse and Zielschuss are breathtaking and the slightest mistake can lead to a catastrophe. But the triumph of making it down safely is worth the risk. That's what Gerald Salmina and Axel Naglich – the producers of 2009 documentary Mount St Elias – thought when they started making STREIF – One Hell of a Ride.
STREIF – One Hell of a Ride
STREIF – One Hell of a Ride provides an insight into the thoughts and emotions of athletes as they prepare for the 75th edition of Hahnenkamm race in 2014. Featured skiers include: Aksel Lund Svindal, Erik Guay, Max Franz, Yuri Danilochkin, Hannes Reichelt, Marcel Hirscher and Felix Neureuther.
Two recent Streif winners, Daron Rahlves and Didier Cuche, narrate the film, providing a fresh take on athletes who – with just two minutes to show what they can do on one of the world’s most impressive natural stages – are willing to risk it all for success. The cutting-edge camera technology, meanwhile, gives viewers a previously unimaginable perspective of racers' skills and the physical stresses their bodies endure.
