There's no better way to experience nature than to have it right outside your front door – and there's no better way to do that than to sleep in a tent. From big walls in Yosemite to alpine lakes in Tajikistan we've collected our favourite 'tenties' – photos from the inside of a tent, looking out – preferably taken immediately upon waking up and saying, 'Today is going to be awesome!'

Contemplating Chimtarga

Russian photographer Oleg Grigoryev snapped the shot above near the peak known as Chimtarga in Tajikistan. At 5,489m, it's the highest mountain of the Fann mountain range, which features 100 peaks and countless lakes.

By Big Allo

The Fann mountains are known for their incredibly blue lakes, and Big Allo lake is one of the most well-known. What makes it the most interesting? It's relatively new – formed during an earthquake in 1916.

Lying in by Lake Alaudin

The Alaudin Lakes sit at 2,700m – making them a standard stop for trekkers acclimatising to higher altitudes for a couple of nights. But with a view like this, who would ever want to leave?!

From bed to the boat

Snowboard photographer likes the summertime, too – which is why he takes a few days to himself in a text at Bow Lake, in Canada, before the Whistler ski season gets underway.

Waiting on the wino

Maybe not technically a tentie, but epic nonetheless. Climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson on the big wall known as El Capitan at Yosemite National Park in California. The ascent was so difficult that they had to camp at a spot known as 'Wino Ledge'. The shot is a finalist image in the Red Bull Illume photo contest – check out more at redbullillume.com.

The other North Face

There's plenty of 'North Faces' in the world (yes, including the ubiquitous outdoor equpiment and clothing brand) but this is one of the more epic ones: the north face of K6, otherwise known as Baltistan Peak in the Masherbrum area of the Karakoram mountain range.

K, another time...

You never spend just one night camping in Pakistan. Jon Griffith, who took the K6 shot above, captures the full moon rising over the Charakusa Valley from the top of Sulu Peak.

Snowed in

Photographer Kamil Glowatz spent the night in a snow storm – and had this picture to show for it. “This is near the top of Rubihorn near Oberstorf, Germany,” he says. “A cold winter morning after a hard night of snowrain! Christian Tubach and I had to get up in the night several times to get rid of the snow from the top and the sides of our tent."

Bafflingly beautiful Baffin Island

Summit Lake, a desolate, remote spot in Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada, is located above the Arctic Circle. It's known for its extreme winds. Better use a few extra tent stakes!
