From winning Tampa Am in 2007, Felipe Gustavo has kept on the production grind. The escalator of Latin American talent trying to make it in the industry spotlight of Los Angeles is by now a well-established one but not a guaranteed road to stardom by any stretch of the imagination.
For every new hero born via that route, there are a great many who tried and dipped, scored one great run of coverage then got hurt and dropped, or sometimes just can’t deal with the adjustment of lifestyle, and head home to re-calibrate their lives and dreams.
Which is fair enough, can’t be mad at it.
What it does show, however, is that it is not enough to just be amazing, because there are amazing skaters from many places of whom we are aware in these enlightened times (so to speak) – you have to want it enough to deal, and deal, and deal again with the palm bruises, the van hours, the homesickness – and still be able to go out and represent, 24/7. The game can be unforgiving.
So – Felipe Gustavo did it; and properly. If you want to do what he did, then watch and learn. This is how to bring down the curtains!
