Hailing from the state of Assam in India, Riyan Parag made his first-class debut as a teenager in the Ranji Trophy and soon caught the attention of the Indian selectors.
Selected to represent his country at youth level, he took part in the 2017 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup and was part of the Indian squad that won the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Following that success, he broke through the domestic ranks by finishing as Assam’s leading run-scorer in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Excelling in the Indian Premier League
Pirag's performances at youth level caught the attention of Rajasthan Royals and in 2019 he was picked to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In his opening season with Rajasthan, he scored 50 runs in his final game of the campaign, becoming the youngest half-centurion in the history of the world’s biggest T20 franchise league.
Pirag continued to impress with the Royals and in 2022 helped them finish as runners-up in the IPL, taking 17 catches – the most by any Indian fielder and non-wicket-keeper in the tournament.
In 2026, Pirag was appointed as the captain of Rajasthan Royals and helped the team end the tournament in third place.
Representing his country
Due to his impressive displays in the IPL, Pirag earned his first senior call-up for his country in 2024 when he made his debut for India in their T20 match against Zimbabwe. In doing so, he became the first male cricketer from India's North-East region to make an international debut.
The same year, Pirag also made his 50-over debut for India against Sri Lanka, claiming three wickets and scoring 15 runs.
