Haitham Al Hadidi: A Drifting Star On The Rise
Sold-out crowds and experienced competitors may intimidate some first-timers, but not 18-year-old Haitham Al Hadidi who thrived under pressure during the Red Bull Car Park Drift Oman Qualifier. The young drifter took hold of second place just two points behind four-time National Champion Ali Al Balushi. A new crowd favourite, fans chanted his name as he was called to the podium and raised him on their shoulders as they celebrated.
Al Hadidi’s results are even more impressive given that he is not only new to the sport, but also new to driving on road. 18-year-old Al Hadidi received his driver’s licence only two months prior to the event.
“It was an amazing experience and I feel so happy to have come in second place in my very first competition,” said Al Hadidi. “Preparing the car wasn’t easy but all of my family supported me. Together we spent days and nights making the car ready for the competition.”
Despite being his first competition, the drifter says, “I always loved cars. Since childhood I’ve been taking part in carting and buggy competitions at the Oman Automobile Association, training after school and on weekends. I only started drifting a few months back when I got my drivers licence.”
The drifter, originally from Nizwa, recently finished secondary school and is due to start university at the Higher College of Technology in January.
“My dream is to put my country on the map for drifting and motorsports in general. Drifting is not a game, it needs a professional driver with a professional approach. I plan to become the best motorsports athlete possible and represent my beautiful Oman internationally.”
Dreams may soon become a reality for the youngster. By placing second at the Oman Qualifier, Al Hadidi has made it through to the Red Bull Car Park Drift Final, the biggest drifting event in the region and the biggest motorsports competition to ever come to Oman. On December 9 the athlete will go head-to-head against the best drifters from across the Middle East and Africa right here in Oman in front of adoring friends, family and fans.
The Red Bull Car Park Drift Final will test the limits of Al Haddidi’s car and courage. He will need to keep his Nissan Silvia in control as he drifts around the winding track, designed by drifting great Abdo Feghali. The rigorous scoring system will penalise him for even the smallest move in the wrong direction or uncontrolled spin. It will surely be a tough competition, but Al Hadidi is feeling proud and excited.
“Feeling anxious before any competition is natural, but with thorough preparation and proper training I will be able to get over my nerves,” he said.
When he is not training for drifting competitions, Al Hadidi spends his time like many other teenagers. “I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. We go camping and take trips to wadis. I really like swimming and jet skiing too as well as games like billiards.”
