Kurt Cobain, the legend, remains one of the most influential and adored musicians to date. Cobain, for those who don’t know (who most likely are quite a few), was the lead singer of Nirvana and the silent rock god and grunge icon of the 90s’ alternative music scene. Cobain left too soon, but still, his legend carries on in today’s music and is unlikely to fade.

This past Tuesday marked the 22nd anniversary of Kurt’s death, he would have been 49 years old. To honor his memory, we bring you 10 facts you might not know about your favorite punk man:
1. When Nirvana was on the rise, Metallica sent them a fax that read: “We really dig Nirvana. Nevermind is the best album of the year. Let’s get together soon, Metallica. PS, Lars hates the band.”

2. Before he got famous, and for some time, Cobain worked as a kids swimming instructor at the YMCA in Aberdeen.
3. As a boy, Cobain had an imaginary friend named “Boddah.”
4. Kurt’s middle name is Donald.

5. Kurt was listening to the R.E.M. album, “Automatic for the People” on the night before his death.
6. The title ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’ stems from a conversation Kurt had with his friend Kathleen Hanna. She spray-painted “Kurt Smells like Teen Spirit” on his apartment wall.
7. In his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington, the welcoming sign now reads "Welcome to Aberdeen, Come as you are".

8. Dave Grohl admitted that the Foo Fighters 1997 song My Hero is about Cobain.
9. After completing the recording of Nevermind, Cobain returned to his home to find he had been evicted, and had to spend the night in his car. The album would go on to sell more than 25 million copies worldwide.
10. The first time Cobain saw himself on television was on September 28, 1991, for a taping of MTV’s 120 Minutes.
