Gaming
Close your eyes and try to remember the first game you ever played on a console or PC. Got it? How hard was it to play your favorite game? How clear were the graphics? How many people were you able to play with?
Now, try and remember the latest game you played recently. How easy was it to start your game? How realistic was the gameplay, and how many people you played with in Multiplayer mode?
Your answers to these questions are self explanatory to how the evolution of gaming is mind blowing. However, one thing never changed: The passion towards gaming. You just can’t hide that goofy smile when reminiscing on the good old gaming days.
Let’s take a trip down the gaming memory lane with Tim Carr – A.K.A “The Geeky Amreeki”, a hardcore gamer, working and living in Doha.
The “Contra” days & the “#KonamiCode”
I’ve been fighting the good fight against both monsters and human villains since the Atari 2600. We are talking Pong with the weird gaming paddles and everything. I have seen and experienced everything since the start of gaming all the way till E3 2017’s announcement of the Xbox One X and the Ataribox.
The original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was where I really fell in love with gaming. I would come home from school, shake my cartridge, blow into it and put it into my NES. The struggle was real with NES cartridges back in the day, but worth it. I would play stuff like Super Mario Brothers and Contra. Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. Yeah you remember that one. The #Konamicode for life!
I also spent hours in the arcades down the street playing Ninja Turtles and Street Fighter.
Then came Mortal Kombat!
Does the word “Fatality” ring a bell? Back when Mortal Kombat was released, friends used to gather around the players just to see the fatalities or to see someone finally beat the campaign mode. Since there was no cool World Wide Web yet, gamers would have to get magazines to find out the fatality codes and then only pass them along to their closest friends.
The Super Nintendo & Sega Era
Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis allowed developers to put the newest and hottest arcade games right at your fingertips at home. I used to chill at home and play for hours alone or with my friends. Well, when the grown ups weren’t watching TV...
Remember DOOM?
Just before the SNES died, DOOM was released for it in a cool looking red cartridge. At the time most people did not know what an FPS was because PC Gamers were the only ones who had experienced Wolfenstein and Doom. FPS took you away to another world, living vicariously through the game. Running around killing monsters in first person was a thrill like no other. It was fast, brutal and required insane reflexes with mind blowing music and sound effects.
Gaming turns into E-Sports
Gaming has never been more popular or more advanced than it is today. Video games are now their very own sport with millions of dollars at stake and Pro Leagues popping up all over for everything from card games to FPS and Real Time Strategy games. E-Sports and Pro gaming teams are now a legit reality. Big time sports franchise owners in the NFL and NBA are even investing in it!
FPS has come a long way. Be it on Playstation, PC or Xbox, I have fought in World War 2, outer space, deep under the sea, other dimensions, up in the clouds and all the way back on the ground again in Modern Warfare and World War 1.
Through it all I have been able to forget the real world for a bit while blowing off steam and eating a few snacks while I chugged a Red Bull to give me that boost I need, so I can go all in and improve my killstreaks.
Watch over for OVERWATCH
My latest passion is Overwatch. Not since Team Fortress 2 has there been an FPS with such polish and panache. Playing on a solid team to deliver that payload or take a point is a real thrill. My next few articles and videos will break down simple things people seem to neglect and some of the more important and tricky stuff that will help take your Overwatch game to the next level.
