It’s tough to be a fan of Japanese games. You hear all about the interesting games that are being launched in Japan and are excited about them, but the harsh truth is that majority of the games will probably not see the light of day in western markets. The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is an example of that. The long-standing franchise, which started in 1979, has since released more than a hundred games but only a number of them were localised. Gundam fans rejoiced when Bandai Namco announced that Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS-Force’s English version is coming out in February 2016.
Hiroshi Kosuge, Producer of Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS-Force, was in Singapore for GameStart Asia 2015 and we had a chance to speak with him. So for those who are not familiar with the futuristic universe of Gundam where piloted robots are weapon of choice, and for fans alike, we listed down the interesting points of the game and our interview with Kosuge.

Going solo – Extreme Force Mode

The Gundam series is known for its versus multiplayer system, but for those who are not a fan of PvP action, the Extreme Force Mode will be your cup of tea. The Extreme Force Mode is the main feature of the game, where you develop your pilot through the completion of missions while enjoying the stories and scenarios from the Gundam universe. According to Kosuge, this is a new addition to the Gundam Extreme VS series.

Classis 2-vs-2 Battle System

Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS-Force retained the online multiplayer system so players can have a good taste of the game while pitting alongside and against other players.

Producer’s Favourite – Creating your dream team

Kosuge’s favourite part of the game is the Battle Mode where you can assemble your dream team of up to seven characters, which you can choose from the plethora of characters who are from the different eras of the Gundam universe. The sheer number of characters available allows a mindblowing number of possible customisations and combinations.

It’s for the fans and sorry for the wait!

Kosuge said his team is aware that there are many Gundam fans in Asia, outside of Japan. And they have been receiving countless requests for an English localised version so this localised release is for those long-suffering fans. He added, “Sorry for the wait!” Fans are more than happy to know that game producers are heeding their requests!

The game is for PS Vita

Although there have been more additions to the PS Vita game library this year, it is still lagging behind the Nintendo 3DS system. So any news of a new game for PS Vita is good news!

Translation… was not a problem!

As Gundam is set in an English world where most names are in English, there were no issues with translation, said Kosuge. It was great to hear that, as it means it’s highly likely that the English version will be close to the Japanese version.

Trivial of the day – Kosuge’s first game!

We sure were excited to meet the Producer of Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS-Force and were curious to know what sparked off his love for games. Although he could not remember what was the first game he played, he remembered clearly the first game he bought, which was “Door Door”, a Japanese puzzle platformer game released in 1983. He bought the game with a Famicom.
