He’s got the whole world in his hands, has Manu Delago. The Austrian musician plays a tuned percussion instrument called a handpan, sometimes known as a hang, and loves the fact it allows him to obtain ‘interesting sounds really close together’.
Delago is self-taught, and the instrument itself has only been around for about 20 years. But he’s so proficient a player that Bjork invited to join her for her Biophilia project. Here he talks us through the basics of playing this strange-looking thing, from the role of the dents in the metal to the reason why he’s taken to playing three at a time – and not forgetting the all-important ding.
Manu Delago is currently touring worldwide with his new album Metromonk. All dates can be found on manudelago.com.
