Everybody expected six-time junior world champion Marco Odermatt to win an FIS World Cup race sooner rather than later. The only question was when? He gave the answer on Friday, as the Swiss hopeful clinched the Beaver Creek Super-G in the United States ahead of Norway's Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and current World Cup leader Matthias Mayer of Austria.
Odermatt won in 1m 10.90s, beating Kilde by 0.10s, while Mayer was 0.14s adrift.
The 22-year-old Swiss skier's only two previous World Cup podiums were in giant slaloms, with a best finish of second in Andorra last season, while his best World Cup result in a Super-G to date was seventh in Lake Louise last weekend.
Odermatt shocked the alpine skiing world at the Junior World Championships at home in Davos in 2018, when he swept the five medals on offer. He also won a giant slalom gold medal at the 2016 Junior Worlds in Sochi.

Third place strengthened Matthias Mayer's lead in the overall World Cup standings. The Austrian is now on 221 points, ahead of Italy's Dominik Paris, who's on 180, and Odermatt on 170.
France's Alexis Pinturault narrowly missed out on his fourth career podium in a Super-G, finishing fourth, 0.37s behind Odermatt.
The World Cup weekend in Beaver Creek continues with a downhill on Saturday and a giant slalom on Sunday.
