Photos: Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, Round 1
Jordy and Mick blistered, Jules popped, Michel powered. This year's Quik Pro couldn't be any better.
Could round one of the Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast have been any better of an intro? Recent storms have left the sand pump clogged with debris, rendering it unusable, so the event had to be moved from patchy, shapeless Snapper, just a stone's huck down the beach to Rainbow, where the shape and sand is just peachy. Sitting there under the warm Gold Coast sun, in a place called Rainbow Bay, watching Kolohe Andino stand up to Kelly Slater and Dane Reynolds with furious frontside wraps, or seeing Jordy Smith dominate his heat in the tropical afternoon rain… well, watching professional surfing doesn't get a whole lot better than this.
Mick Fanning stood on the grass at Rainbow before his heat, not up in the competitors area. A man of the people! He watched closely before running up the point to scoop his jersey and drift out into the lineup. He then proceeded to clock a combined heat total of 17.24 points and convincingly catapult himself to round three. Julian Wilson had an unlucky interference, which means a docked score, but still won his heat (yes, he was surfing that well). Michel Bourez looked as though the Superbank had stolen his wallet and he was seeking revenge on it. Swinging straight into the third round is the sweetest fruit, ain't it?
Standouts on the Day: Well, Jordy Smith. Second-highest heat total of the day with speed, power and flow – just what the doctor (judges) ordered. He had the audience at Hello, and looked like the heat was all his from the start. Mick Fanning was more in tune than a symphony. He personified hometown advantage and was oozing the confidence that only relentless training can bring.
Honorable Mention(s): Kolohe Andino didn't win his heat, but boy he looked good. Committed frontside wraps in the pocket first hit. Powerful closeout drop-wallets. And, he beat Dane Reynolds. Adriano De Souza ripped but was unfortunate to come up against Travis Logie during the heat of his life. You can't be bummed about losing with 17.10 combined total.
What to Watch For: Round two is gonna be a doozy. Joel Parkinson may've missed out on a round one win, but he still posted a total of 17.73. The 21Days star is surfing like a world champ and, hopefully, we'll see a Mick/Parko match-up at some point. Also, Dane Reynolds will try to keep his wildcard burning in round two, and really, every time he stands up on a wave, you can expect fireworks.
