The ultimate skate ramp: an urban myth becomes reality

In Porto Alegre, a big city in southern Brazil with 1.4 million people, the Centro Administrativo Fernando Ferrari (CAFF) is hard to miss. The government building is almost 89 metres tall, but what really makes it stand out is its shape. With its huge curved design, it looks just like a skateboard quarterpipe. Because of that, people in the city started calling it “the ultimate ramp.” For decades, the local skate community has joked and dreamed about it, making up stories, creating memes and even editing videos that show a skater dropping in from the top.
Over time, the building became more than just offices, it turned into a local legend and one of Porto Alegre’s most iconic sights. Now, Sandro Dias is turning myth into reality, skating down the structure – and trying to drop in from as far up as possible.

A massive ramp now snakes along the curved façade of the CAFF building, transforming its architecture into a daring playground for an epic skateboarding feat. Crafted from plywood panels, the ramp overlays the structure’s weathered concrete, which had become too cracked and unsafe for riding. This temporary addition not only preserves the building’s iconic exterior but also creates the perfect smooth surface for Dias to take on his jaw-dropping descent from top to bottom.
Multiple safety measures were implemented to counter the risks associated with this challenge. Air fences, typically used in MotoGP™, were positioned at the end of the ramp to allow Dias to safely come to a stop. In addition, he is wearing special gear, including a spine protector. He is outfitted in lightweight, heat-sealed materials from Prada's Linea Rossa collection to meet the high demands of the feat.

A six-time Vert world champion, Dias turned 50 earlier this year and has remained a prominent figure in global skateboarding. He is an example that progression doesn’t stop at any age.
Known as the 'King of the 540' for his signature trick, Dias had made history as the first Brazilian to land a 900 and the first in the world to do so during a competition. In 2019, he delivered a jaw-dropping performance, skating down a 30m-high structure on the Estaiadinha Bridge in São Paulo. Alongside his legendary career, Dias has been a driving force in popularising skateboarding in Brazil and inspiring future generations through initiatives like the Sandro Dias Institute, which offers free skateboarding access to young people in vulnerable situations.
“He's a skateboarder through and through. He has always been pushing the limits," pro-skateboarder Ryan Sheckler, who is also Dias’ mentee, friend and competitor, said. "Sandro has always been going higher and faster than everybody. And at 50 years old, to be seeing something like this and making it a reality, it just shows the skate in his heart."
