With developers who worked on the SSX series and Skate behind it, Snowboarding The Next Phase is going to have people working out how to best tackle the slopes for a while, especially since it's the first snowboarding game on Nintendo Switch.
Don't dismay, though, we're here to help you get the best air, score the highest points, and generally be a superstar when hitting the slopes in the game.

Upgrade by unlocking gear

The Next Phase works on an upgrade system, whereby completing challenges will level you up and win you new equipment. By collecting as much of it as you can, you’ll be able to have a huge pool of gear to select from, but crucially, unlocking this gear changes your multiplier. Different missions on different courses will reward you with gear that changes that score multiplier, but if you’re struggling to move forward, you’ll want to complete the tasks that unlock the high percentage changing gear, like a snowmobile that adds +3.7%. That way, once you unlock the harder courses, you will already have a decent multiplier.

Keep control

One of the best things about Nintendo's Switch is that there are multiple ways to play any game, regardless of how it's been designed. You can play in handheld mode, as a portable console, or pull the JoyCons out and use a single one as a controller. For The Next Phase we recommend using the JoyCon Grip or, better still, a Pro Controller if you've got one. To hit the precise airtime you need to get the right rotations and landings, the better the controller, the more control you'll have.

Mix up the buttons to mix up the tricks

With two buttons to get your jump ready (A or B), you might be forgiven for bursting into the air and then hitting the same button to start a grab. Whichever controller you’re using, make sure you use the Grab Tweaks to enhance those grabs. The triggers activate the tweaks, and the A, B, X, Y face buttons perform the grabs themselves. Experiment and be creative: hold that grab until the last possible moment, then hit the snow cleanly.

Complete missions in Arcade Mode to keep on course

In Arcade Mode, the idea is to score big, but to keep playing you'll need to complete a mission per run. The missions range from hitting certain tricks to breaking a score ceiling, or even collecting geotags, but if you don't achieve at least one of the three missions per run, you'll lose access to the course you’re on. If you're loving that particular course, then you're out of luck. The idea of this mode is to run it over and over again until you find the perfect route to get the biggest score.

Don't fixate on the photo moments

When playing, you'll be told that you can complete tricks at photo moments to get in the Nintendo Album. 'Wow', you might think, but what that actually means is your Nintendo Album – the one on your Switch. The only time you need to stress about the photos is when a specific mission comes up, and you want to level up your character or save a lift ticket in Arcade Mode. Otherwise, just go for the big score and don’t worry about getting the perfect air-selfie.

Wipeouts aren't a problem, but 'Smashes' are desired

Snowboarding The Next Phase is an arcade-style game, meaning you don't have to worry much about real-world physics, and whether you'll wipeout if you mistime a landing, even if you're attempting a 1080 and don't get the angles quite right. Essentially, you won't score highly, but you won’t perish, either. On the flip side, 'Smashes' are when you land a jump dead on, literally smashing your board into the white stuff. Get the angle right, then, and you'll be getting big points for your big air. Nicely done.

Revisit career mode to progress

Every time you hit a course there'll be three missions to complete, but even getting after all three on a single run (fun as it may be), it won’t be immediately obvious as to how you progress. Each course per region has nine total challenges, and once you've done the first three Bronze Missions, you’ll unlock the Silver missions, and so on.
Doing this will unlock more regions, too, so getting through the Bronze missions on each of the Greenline region will unlock Hozameen, and then finishing off some Silver missions will unlock Waputik. Keep going and you'll soon have Valdez (the final region) unlocked, and will be able to play whichever course you prefer.
