PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is one of the most complex games out there, but one area that's often overlooked when it comes to talking about this complexity is the difference when you play in Solos compared to Duos and Squads.
While nothing really changes apart from the addition of some team-mates, it does change the way you play. In squads you can position tactically to flank opponents, take multiple fights at once and use a whole host of other tactics that wouldn’t be possible in solo matches. There’s also the revive system that effectively gives you multiple lives in a lot of situations and can allow you to comeback from a seemingly lost game.
In the pro scene, it looks like squad-based play is becoming the standard for most competitions, but we’ve also seen a few events dabble with both solos and duos, meaning the best players in the world, and some of the most famous, mostly play a mix of all three different options. In order to find out which they prefer to play, we caught up with a bunch of them and asked them which of the three modes they like the best.

Despite Squads being the main competitive mode, there's a good mix of answers from the players here. Solos seems to be the way to go for improving your individual skill in most areas, as you're alone and don't have to worry about coordination with your team in order to do well. It can also feel like the most rewarding, as you'll have bested every other player in the game to get that sweet chicken dinner, and you know it was all down to your skills.
Surprisingly, some of the big names from the world of CS:GO seem to favor Duos, despite them being used to playing in larger teams in their main title. The point about only having one person to revive a team-mate is certainly a good one, as it can often feel impossible to win a fight against a squad who have good cover to revive team-mates behind.
Finally, Squads seems to be the most popular choice, which isn't that much of a surprise considering that is the main game mode for the pros. The extra players means there's more coordination involved, and generally speaking, it’s harder to play at the very top level than a solo match. It also creates a more entertaining broadcast, as it’ll be easier to watch everything that’s going on, and the fights will last a lot longer, instead of just being a few bullets, like in solos.
Of course, the real answer to the question of which you should be playing, is how many friends do you have that want to play with you. In our experience, PUBG is at its most enjoyable when you play with others and can strategize and have a laugh with friends. Although if everyone’s busy, then we love a good solo game as well, even if it does feel a lot harder to get that all important chicken dinner.
