Ice cross downhill, the sport requiring inline skating skills, a long and winding sheet of ice and no shortage of guts, is one of the newer and more extreme winter sports.
The 300-metre-long permanent ice track at Serena, in Espoo, is the venue for the first of four races on Saturday, February 1. 2014 also includes stops in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in America's Midwest, the Russian capital, Moscow, and ice cross downhill favourite Quebec City, in Canada.
A sport that was first unveiled in neighbouring Sweden in 2001, since 2010 ice cross downhill has grown to form a world championship as skaters from all over the world do battle in what is described as the fastest sport on skates.
The weather's likely to be freezing-cold in Finland, but the heat is already on for the champion Derek Wedge, with competitors hurling themselves down frozen sheets of ice in pursuit of the pace-setter from 2013!
