Picking a winner in a race that has hundreds of competitors, driving and riding in multiple classes, and covering more than 7,500km is no easy task – much like the Dakar itself. Break it down into different categories, however, and it becomes clear that there are several favourites heading into the race.
Carlos Sainz, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Fernando Alonso are all worth a mention when it comes to cars, with the first two sharing multiple Dakar successes between them and the latter is, well, Fernando Alonso.
Meanwhile on two wheels, Sam Sunderland, Toby Price and Matthias Walkner look like pre-event favourites, again taking the lion’s share of podiums over the past few years.
And when it comes to trucks, it’s difficult to look past the incredible Eduard Nikolaev, who’s currently gunning for his fourth consecutive Dakar win.
