From illustrators to sculptors, the exhibition flaunted all different mediums of art, as these artists decipher the theme ‘Metamorphosis in Karachi’ with their own interpretations. The artists have been selected due to their unique art style, out of the box thinking as well as their keen sense of identity; standing out from the crowds. The artists on board Red Bull Canvas Cooler 2018 are:
FAIZAN RIEDINGER
This self-taught half Pakistani half German artist has grown up in a family of artists, and his influences come largely from his Sufi master father, and his art professor mother. His art is all about expressing emotions through repetitive patterns & geometry and can be extremely therapeutic to observe.
AYESHA TARIQ
This Penguin published author and illustrator from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture loves dabbling in a myriad of hobbies including Graphic design, theatre, stand-up comedy and illustration to name a few. Her art style is a true testimony of her various interests, as it has a fun quirky feel about it!
WAJEEHA ABBASI
Pop vibrant colors, shapes, patterns and icons define Wajeeha’s work with a strong sense of identity. Her work represents narratives, moments from everyday life, themes around women and the philosophy of the Self and the Other. This Karachi based illustrator’s unique style has also landed her gigs with NASA, Ladybird books publications to name a few.
SARA PAGGANWALA
Born in Karachi, with a BFA Honours from Central St. Martins, participant in various shows as well as being an assistant curator for the Karachi Biennale 2017, Sara Pagganwala is no newbie to the art scene in Karachi. She’s a super talented multidisciplinary artist, food sculptor, baker and curator.
SUMMAIYA JILLANI
Summaiya Jillani first came under the radar in the art scene in 2012, when she painted her famous Desi Marilyn Monroe. She has since gone on to create some vivid paintings of famous icons from cinema, sports, music and science; which have gained her recognition amongst the emerging artists of Pakistan. Regardless of the subject, there’s always one element that seems to be significant part of Summaiya’s works; red roses!
SAFWAN SUBZWARI
With his bright pops of color and illustrations, Safwan Subzwari stands out as your eyes adjust to the works to find the embedded themes and elements inside. A multidisciplinary artist and co-founder of Six Eyes Collective from Karachi, Pakistan, Safwan has exhibited his works at art shows in Karachi, Dubai, Berlin & Barcelona as well as illustrated for several children’s’ books.
SAAD KHURSHID
A graphic designer from Pakistan, Saad’s designs are majorly influenced by the modernist, 'International Style' popular in the 60s and his work employs elaborate grid-systems, through which he creates emotive, visual compositions out of type and geometric shapes. He currently runs a studio practice in Karachi, which focuses on branding, typography and illustration.
AZIZA AHMAD
Aziza is a graphic designer, illustrator and print fiend based in Karachi, Pakistan. A 2015 graduate of Communication Design from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, her playful subversion of stereotypes and representation of the Female Experience follow a golden ratio of equal measures cuteness + crassness + creepiness. She designs & illustrates for small press Mongrel Books and edtech startup Dot & Line and has worked with VICE, Herald, Aurat March and Vasl Artists' Association.
AREEBA SIDDIQUE
Areeba Siddique is an illustrator, and student at the Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture. Her work deals with the lives of modern Muslim women and she is a regular contributor at the internationally renowned Rookie magazine.
