As the game is an "auto battler", meaning the battle itself is uncontrollable, the way you effect the game is through positioning your heroes, and probably more important: picking the right ones. The game has 60 different heroes grouped into five different tiers - common to legendary - all with different Alliances (or classes), which number 23 in total. All heroes has two, and some even three, Alliances.
Alliances are important because of the bonuses you can get from them. Two or more fielded heroes with the same Alliance will get you bonuses that are vital in order to win. The bonuses ranges from Magic Resistance to Improved Attack Speed. Although these bonuses are VERY important, sometimes individual heroes can make the difference in a tight game. In this article, we list the best individual heroes - the auto picks, the best of the bunch, the cream of the crop, the S-tier etc etc. These are the heroes you should build your team around:

Doom
Doom the Demon is an awesome pick for a DPS:er, tank, or really anything you need because of his high HP, armor and damage combined with a great ability: Doom (shocker) that dishes out tons of damage AND silences enemies. And because he's a demon, he enables his Alliance bonus all by himself. One demon wrecking ball.
Medusa
The quick-firing and stunning (so sorry) Medusa is the ranger you need. She fires her arrows quickly with high damage AND she can fire them three at a time! Compared to many other ranged DPS:ers, she's not even that squishy. Assassins who'll try to flank her will suffer from the ability Stone Gaze, which slows down the attackers and ultimately turns them into stone. A great and reliable hero.

Kunkka
The infamous Kunkka is always a good pick. A tank with one of the best, if not THE best, ability in the game: Ghostship. Kunkka will summon a great vessel that'll do massive damage in a huge area - and to top it of, Ghostship also stuns your opponents. Kunkka's one of the top two crowd controllers in the game. If you need someone on the frontline to hold the line, solid Kunkka's your guy.
Tidehunter
Tidehunter is perhaps the best hero at crowd control in the entire game. This scaly Hunter can do massive damage AND take a lot of hits before he's down. And with his ability Ravage, which does enormous AoE damage and stuns for a long time, he's a one man army. Right now, he is the best hero in the entire game. Pick him fast before he get's nerfed.

Dragon Knight
Dragon Knight is meta-defining. He's that popular. And you know what? He earned it. With three Alliances (Human, Dragon and Knight) he'll sync with a big amount of heroes. He plays a big part of the, right now, most played Alliance-combos: Knight/Dragon. By himself, he's a decent allrounder with good stats, but combined with either another Knight, Human or Dragon, he because a beast. Especially when combined with another Dragon, when the bonus becomes enabled, and he turns into a dragon - oh boy.
Pudge / Tiny
Two heroes with the same goal: to keep your opponents to go for your squishy damage dealers. Both have a huge amount of health, and are easily upgraded because of their low tiers (Tier 1 and Tier 2). You'll get them fast and you'll get them to three stars in the blink of an eye. Tiny's ability throws an opponent for a few cells, while damaging them, and Pudge's is the opposite, he'll draw an enemy towards him, often rescuing one of your lower health heroes at the same time. Both are great choices to choose as tanks.

Troll Warlord
The Troll Warlord is a beast. He's a frontliner with ranged attacks - and the blows are coming in fast. His ability will increase his attack speed after every blow. If there are one or more Trolls in your team, the attack speed will increase even further. He'll become a storm of axes, basically. Oh, and did we mention that every blow will hit HARD? With high HP and armor he can take a few hits as well.
Enigma
The hero with the highest potential damage output. Although he is kind of a glass cannon, he makes up for it with his ability and Alliance. When combined with another Warlock, he gains Lifesteal. His ability - Midnight Pulse - drains a percentage of your opponents life, which is especially useful when used on tanks. Therefore, he might loose life fast, but he often gains it even faster.
