Jennifer Loveless on House and Techno: “Every City Has Its Own Sound”
I like to understand the context of each city, every city has its own sound, and I like to let that subtly influence my sets.
Who is Jennifer Loveless?
Hey Jennifer! Can you introduce yourself to those who don’t know you?
My name is Jennifer Loveless. I’m a DJ and producer currently based in Berlin. I come from Canada and Australia, and I play music in the realm of house and techno.
Jennifer Loveless and her music style
How would you describe your musical influences?
My style of music is rooted in house with elements of techno. It’s rhythmic, energetic, and usually upbeat. I draw a lot of influence from American house, and I enjoy blending genres when it makes sense, to take people on a journey.
I like to play with balance. My sets move between restrained house that falls into groovy techno, then back into harder house, with a bit of a queer edge. There’s also a tint of disco influence in there. I try not to pigeonhole myself too much.
What’s your earliest memory of music?
I’ve been involved with music since I was three years old, when I started playing piano. That continued throughout my childhood in Toronto, Canada. I was in a band with my brothers as a teenager, and I was always doing music in some form. I was even throwing dancehall and soca parties in my basement in high school. I also hosted a radio show in high school focused on rap and R&B.
My connection to electronic music came later, during university. I went to a dubstep party, and that experience really sparked something for me. It morphed into deep house, where I stayed until I moved to Melbourne, Australia, and then I branched out into different rounds of electronic music.
If you listen carefully to my sets and music, you can hear that I like to sprinkle in little surprising moments from places in my past.

Jennifer Loveless' musical journey
When did you start to pursue music full-time?
I guess it was after COVID. After that period, I decided to go for it full-time, two feet in, and see what happens.
How has that journey been since making that decision?
It’s been amazing and it’s been a ride.Being a freelance artist comes with challenges you don’t fully understand until you’re in it.
You’re exposed to so many new cities, people, and contexts to wrap your head around, and that can be overwhelming. As an artist, you’re always trying to translate what you observe and feel into your own craft.
I like to understand the context of each city, every city has its own sound, and I like to let that subtly influence my sets.
Jennifer Loveless on Playing Back-to-Back
You’ll be playing in Stockholm for Red Bull Back2Beyond. How do you approach tailoring a set for a city like Stockholm?
For this event, Axel Boman is hosting the night, and I’ve been a fan of his releases for a long time. Since we’ll be playing back-to-back, I’ll be more influenced by the other artists on the lineup rather than the city itself.
I’ll be playing with Jimi Jules and DJ Tennis and have never played with either of them before. I’m looking forward to the new experience.

What do you think about back-to-back sets?
I see it as an opportunity to learn. You’re building a story together, and you’re not fully in control, which I really enjoy. There’s more spontaneity, and I quite like that.
The best back-to-backs are when no one is trying to overshadow the other person. You reach a flow state where time passes quickly and it’s fun, without much thinking – you’re just feeling it out, and everything feels intuitive.
What was your reaction when you first heard about this event?
I was super excited to be playing with these artists and humbled to be included.
What’s your relationship with Axel Boman?
It goes back to before I ever met him. One of my favorite songs of all time is his track Dance All Night. I eventually met Axel while sharing a transfer back from a festival where we had both played, and we spent the whole ride talking. He’s incredibly warm and genuine. Playing this event with him feels like a nice continuation of the storyline.
