She gives the record a gentle nudge, her face neutral and focused on the task. She doesn’t seem bothered at all by the crowd behind her wearing bucket hats and leather skirts, moving increasingly closer to the booth. Mama Snake keeps her eyes on the decks, starting out with punchy techno that evolves into trance, to big beat breaks, and back to trance again, always with a steady pace at 130 bpm or more.
Judging by the euphoric reactions in the audience at Dekmantel last summer, it seems like the scene is ready for a trance revival and the fact that (to quote a Youtube commenter) “Techno DJs are allowed to play fast again!”
Mama Snake is part of the Copenhagen based Apeiron Crew together with DJ:s Smokey and Solid Blake, and the former member Courtesy. The girls are steadily carving their way through lineups all over Europe and Courtesy recently released a compilation on her new label Kulør, showcasing a lot of up and coming local talents. The record is a promise of what might be a new chapter of Danish music export which falls into the category of what Courtesy herself describes as "spacecraft techno".
Johanna Schneider is the promoter of Under Bron in Stockholm, and she’s also a Swedish label owner and techno head based in Copenhagen. We asked her about the upcoming night and the Danish club music craze.
When you think about this Saturday – what makes you the most excited?
The combination of Sweden's and Denmark's (where i moved to EXACTLY one year ago) absolute finest. My worlds are meeting in the most perfect way.
Why is the Danish techno scene blowing up right now?
Im not sure how genres always defines where its from, but it does. And for the first time in a long time I think the music coming out of Denmark sounds more danish than ever, and that makes it honest and gets through to people in a different way.
In which ways does the clubbing scene in Copenhagen differ from the Stockholm scene?
Well, I would says it's the bureaucracy. It's so much easier to get a license with better opening hours in Copenhagen. People are not as nerdy as in Sweden which I LOVE, a lot of people just want to party and I think that is reason enough to go out.
Mama Snake will be playing at Under Bron Jan 12 with support from local DJ:s Nadja Chatti and Philippa Pacho. Check out the event here.
