VALORANT now has an ever-expanding roster of unique agents. This not only provides variety for players and viewers alike, but also means that choosing a team with the strongest agents working together has become even more important. In fact, the choice of team composition on the field of battle could just make the difference at tournaments like Red Bull Home Ground.
With 31 agents on the roster, picking the right one is half the battle. We checked the latest ranked data and the pro meta to show you the best VALORANT agents in 2026, from the S-tier controller everyone is talking about to the sleeper sentinel that nobody picks but everyone should.

Everything below is situational at best in ranked play. Keep in mind that tier rankings shift with every patch and map rotation, and that an agent you know inside out will often serve you better than a supposedly “better” agent you’ve barely played.

The importance of team composition

A great agent is only as good as the team around them. You do not want to enter a match with five aggressive Duelists, and a team of only Sentinels and Controllers might struggle to put pressure on the enemy. A good rule of thumb is one Duelist, one Initiator, one Controller and one Sentinel, plus a flexible fifth pick that fits the map.
To get you started, we've listed a few popular agents for each role, so that you'll be as prepared as possible for your matches and tournaments.

Duelists

Duelists are your entry fraggers. They create space, win the first fight and give the rest of the team room to follow up. In 2026, three of them stand out.

Neon

Fast, loud and currently the strongest Duelist in the ranked data. Neon combines a sprint, two energy walls and a stunning slide into a kit that lets you take space before the defense has time to react. Her ultimate rewards good aim with a lightning-fast beam, which makes her a favorite among players who like to play on the front foot.
  • Role: Duelist
  • Ranked win rate: 52%
  • Ranked pick rate: 5.5%
  • Best for: Fast executes and aggressive entries

Jett

Still one of the most picked agents in the game, and still the go-to for players who want to create highlight plays. Jett's dash, updraft and smokes let her take angles and get out again. Her Blade Storm ultimate can decide a round on an eco, because every headshot is lethal. The catch: popularity does not equal results. Her win rate sits close to 50%, so she needs a skilled player behind the mouse.
  • Role: Duelist
  • Ranked win rate: 50.3%
  • Ranked pick rate: 13.6%
  • Best for: Mechanically strong players who love mobility

Phoenix

The old-school Duelist has made a comeback in 2026. Phoenix brings self-sufficient utility with flashes, a wall and a healing fire, and his Run It Back ultimate lets you take risky fights without paying the price. That makes him a reliable pick on maps where a solo entry gets rewarded.
  • Role: Duelist
  • Ranked win rate: 51.9%
  • Ranked pick rate: 3.6%
  • Best for: Players who want to flash and frag on their own

Sentinels

Sentinels lock down sites and flanks and give your team the confidence to rotate. In the current ranked data, this role contains one of the most underrated picks in the game.

Sage

Hardly anyone picks her, but Sage posts the best win rate of all Sentinels. The only healer in VALORANT can slow pushes, wall off entrances and bring a team-mate back with her resurrection ultimate. In a mode where teams often fight on their own, a player who keeps everyone alive is worth a lot.
  • Role: Sentinel
  • Ranked win rate: 52.2%
  • Ranked pick rate: 1.3%
  • Best for: Team players who want to keep their squad in the fight

Cypher

The veteran of the Sentinel role is still a safe choice. With cameras, tripwires and cages, Cypher gives you information on every angle and lets you play for the late round. If you like to play slow, read the enemy and punish mistakes, he is for you.
  • Role: Sentinel
  • Ranked win rate: 52%
  • Ranked pick rate: 3.2%
  • Best for: Patient players with a talent for reading the game

Controllers

Controllers shape the fight with smokes and utility. In 2026, one name towers over the rest.

Clove

The face of the current meta. Clove tops the win rate charts at 52.8%, and she is also the most picked Controller by a clear margin. The reason is simple: she can use her abilities after death, she can bring herself back with her ultimate, and she is made to fight in the front line instead of hiding behind smokes. For solo queue players, she is the most forgiving way to carry a team.
  • Role: Controller
  • Ranked win rate: 52.8%
  • Ranked pick rate: 13.9%
  • Best for: Aggressive smokers who want to take fights

Omen

Omen is a different story. In ranked play, he currently sits near the bottom of the win rate list, but at the highest level of competitive play he remains one of the most picked agents in the game. His smokes, flash and teleport give teams the flexibility they need on every map. If you play with a coordinated squad, Omen is worth another look.
  • Role: Controller
  • Ranked win rate: 47.9%
  • Ranked pick rate: 2.4%
  • Best for: Coordinated teams that love flexible smoke plays

Viper

Viper is the specialist of the Controller role. Her Toxic Screen wall and Viper’s Pit ultimate reward careful preparation and precise lineups, making her a staple of double-Controller compositions at the pro level. She is harder to master than most other Controllers, but in the right hands, she can lock down an entire site.
  • Role: Controller
  • Ranked win rate: 51.1%
  • Ranked pick rate: 1.8%
  • Best for: Lineup nerds and methodical players
05

Initiators

Initiators gather information and break defenses open. Two agents lead the way in 2026.

Sova

The Russian archer has been a pillar of VALORANT for years and still is. His Recon Bolt and Owl Drone give your team the information it needs, and his Shock Bolts and Hunter's Fury ultimate punish players who hide in the wrong spot. Sova is also one of the most picked agents among the pros, which shows how well his kit fits almost every composition.
  • Role: Initiator
  • Ranked win rate: 51.8%
  • Ranked pick rate: 8.1%
  • Best for: Players who want to lead the team with information

Fade

Fade is the best Initiator when it comes to tracking. Her Prowler hunts down enemies, her Haunt reveals them, and her Nightfall ultimate shuts a site down. On several maps she ranks among the top agents in the ranked data, and her win rate matches Sova's.
  • Role: Initiator
  • Ranked win rate: 51.8%
  • Ranked pick rate: 5.4%
  • Best for: Aggressive Initiators who love to hunt
06

What the pros pick

Ranked and pro play are two different worlds. At Masters Santiago in March 2026, Yoru and Viper shared the top spot with a pick rate of 48.03% each, with Sova and Neon completing the top four. Over the course of VCT Stage 2, Omen, Neon and Sova dominated the pick charts in most regions, before the best teams in the world met at Champions Shanghai.
The key takeaway is that pros lean on controllers like Omen and Viper and on information agents like Sova, while ranked data rewards self-sufficient picks like Clove and Sage. Yoru is a good example. He is a pro staple, but in ranked he sits in the middle of the pack because his kit rewards teamwork and clever timing.
