Kickstarter might be home to all manner of crazy inventions and moonshot projects, but it’s also a great hub for games. And while Steam’s Greenlight system and plenty of free tools make the PC one of the main beneficiaries of this new strain of indie titles, casual gamers on the go are reaping the benefits too – mobile platforms also get plenty of action from developers seeking funding. Broken Age
Available: Android, iOS
A classic point-and-click adventure from the people behind such legendary, stitch-rippingly funny titles as Day of the Tentacle, only this time with plenty of pathos too. Tim Schafer’s original campaign for the game then known as Double Fine Adventure almost three years ago raised millions and opened the door for other indies to try the same tactic. And if you backed it, you got to see exclusive insights into the development process, with all the joy, heartache, and headaches involved.
Shadowrun Returns
Available: Android, iOS
This turn-based single-player game is set in the world of Shadowrun, a fantasy tabletop role-playing game where cybernetics, magic and fantasy creatures coexist. Since its release in 1989, the original game has spawned novels, a card game, and numerous video games. No wonder this one raised nearly $2 million. It’s a sprawling, addictive return to form from the universe’s creator, and one you can take with you on the go.
Star Command
Available: Android, iOS
Always wanted to explore the galaxy? Now’s your chance. Build your own ship, recruit your crew, and get out there. It’s available on iOS and Android, and has some gorgeous 8-bit graphics. Think Theme Hospital meets Alien Isolation and you’re not far off.
Republique
Available: iOS
This title sees you help a character named Hope to escape from a 1984-inspired dystopia, and is developed by a team whose credits include Metal Gear Solid 4 and Halo 4. As you’d expect, it involves plenty of stealth. Originally planned as an iOS exclusive, the game was also eventually released on Windows PC and Mac too, while Android gamers will finally be able to kick back with the game this Thursday on the 23rd, alongside the launch of Episode 3.
UFHO2
Available: iOS
A turn-based strategy game that sees you trying to outwit your opponent in a hexagonal maze. Its fiendish gameplay will have you coming back for more. Unlike some of the games on this list from developers with pedigree asking for big budgets, UFHO2 was turned around on a dime (Well, a little over $10,000), and came with some charming Kickstarter merch, including hand painted Xbox controllers.
Back To Bed
Available: Android, iOS
A 3D puzzler based inside a surrealist painting? That’s Back to Bed. It focuses on a sleepwalker called Bob and his subconscious guardian Subob. Narcolepsy doesn’t usually feature in games, which makes this one of the most original titles in recent memory. Not bad for a title funded with a modest $13,000.
Underground Kingdom

You are in a room. It is dark. An apple is on the table. Do you eat the apple? Yes, this is based on those Choose Your Own Adventure books that were so popular in the pre-mobile age. Another treat for nostalgia fans.
Godus
Available: iOS
As you’d expect of a game from Peter Molyneux (the legendary, outspoken creator of Populus and Black & White), Godus is massively ambitious. It’s essentially a reinvention of Populus, adding the detailed construction and multiplayer elements of Dungeon Keeper to make something new entirely, not least because the game’s god is an actual human being. Warning: it will take over your life.
Adventure Jump
Available: Android, iOS
An anime-inspired platformer for iOS and Android that sees you taking on the dark wizard who has brought chaos to your world. In classic platformer style, you have to rescue your girlfriend. Though turning the format on its head, she is also a playable character.
Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse
Available: Android, iOS
Point and click adventures are perfect for small touchscreens, so it should come as no surprise to see another rounding off the list. Broken Age is a classic series, and the latest entry from Revolution Games certainly lives up to expectations. Prepare to get so engrossed you miss your stop on the bus.
