A Session With Surf Photographer Zak Noyle
Surfing's best water photographer drops some knowledge on the next generation of young lensmen.
Yes, it’s the middle of summer, but school was still in session off the coast of Newport Beach. Surf photographer Zak Noyle teamed up with @redbullLAX to put on an Instagram photo contest where the winners were invited to an on-site water photography class at The Wedge.
Noyle is world-renowned for his surf photography, known for swimming in some of the heaviest lineups on earth to chase previously-unseen angles of surfers like Jamie O'Brien and Ian Walsh. He was also one of the first to test what photographic potential his phone had in the water. Armed with the right technology and the proper phone case, Noyle now shoots from the lineup and posts directly to his Instagram without even having to swim in.
"You can shoot any photo on your iPhone,” said Noyle. “Why limit yourself to land? I love shooting in the water, that's where I'd rather be.”
For the contest, Noyle ran through all the best photos tagged #🌊📷 on Instagram to pick the invitees. The prize, along with the one-on-one time with Noyle, was that the winners would have their best photos from the class featured here on RedBull.com. Enjoy those, below:
