Throughout his career, Daniel Dhers was nothing if not consistent, consistently the best, that is. Following an exceptional breakout year in 2006, the Venezuelan went on to claim an Olympic medal, countless Pan American titles and five X Games golds during an illustrious 20-year career.
That success couldn't be in sharper contrast to his low-key start to the sport. Dhers only took up BMX because his friends got bikes. But his attitude changed when his parents moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, when he was 16. This gave him the chance to develop his skills against a wider circle of riders and, more importantly, a bigger and better park.
Chasing a dream
Dhers would travel the length of the Americas before finally settling in the United States, the Mecca of BMX Freestyle, and garnering great success at the likes of the X Games and BMX Worlds.
He was also crowned the first-ever FISE World Series Champion in 2014 and in 2021 won a silver medal in the freestyle competition at the Games in Tokyo.
In 2024, at the conclusion of the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, Dhers announced his retirement. Despite stepping away from competitive action, his legacy had already been secured and he remains one of the most important riders in the development of the sport.
An inspirational figure
Renowned for his technical proficiency and viewed as one of the all-time greats, Dhers still showcases his skills at exhibition events around the globe. He has also transitioned to coaching and is determined to help the next generation of riders.
