David Coulthard started his racing career in karting when he was just 11, working his way up through the local championships and slowly gravitating south from his native Scotland and into Formula Ford in 1989, where he won the first ever McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the Year award.

In 1993, his big break arrived when he was asked to be a test driver for the world champion F1 team Williams/Renault. He was test driver for Williams at the time of Ayrton Senna’s tragic death, after which he was paired up with future world champion Damon Hill to complete the F1 season for the team.
