Matteo Berrettini grew up in a tennis-loving family in Rome, but initially preferred sports including swimming and judo. His younger brother Jacopo, also a professional tennis player, encouraged him to return to tennis at the age of eight, setting him on the path to a professional career.
From first ATP title to the world's top 10
After working his way through the ITF and Challenger circuits, Berrettini won his first ATP Challenger title in San Benedetto in 2017. His breakthrough at tour level followed in 2018, when he broke into the world's top 100 and claimed his maiden ATP Tour singles title in Gstaad.
Berrettini took another major step forward in 2019, winning titles in Budapest and Stuttgart before reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open. The results helped him break into the world's top 10, qualify for the ATP Finals and earn the ATP Most Improved Player of the Year award.
Wimbledon final and rise to world No. 6
His biggest Grand Slam breakthrough came in 2021. After winning the Serbia Open and his first ATP 500 title at Queen's Club, Berrettini became the first Italian man to reach a Wimbledon singles final, finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic.
Berrettini continued that run at the 2022 Australian Open, reaching the semi-finals and climbing to a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 6. Later that season, he won back-to-back grass-court titles in Stuttgart and at Queen's Club.
Comeback titles and Davis Cup success
A series of injuries interrupted the following seasons, but Berrettini returned strongly in 2024. He won three ATP Tour titles in Marrakech, Gstaad and Kitzbühel, taking his career total to 10, and was named ATP Comeback Player of the Year. He also helped Italy retain the Davis Cup.
In 2025, Berrettini reached the quarter-finals of the Miami Open before injuries again disrupted parts of his season. He finished the year by playing a key role in Italy's third consecutive Davis Cup title, winning singles matches in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
Return to a Grand Slam quarter-final
After withdrawing from the 2026 Australian Open before his opening match, Berrettini returned to Roland Garros for the first time since 2021 and reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final since the 2022 US Open. His run ended when a hip injury forced him to retire against Matteo Arnaldi.
