After Olivia Babcock’s freshman season at University of Pittsburgh, she earned the accolade of not only AVCA Freshman of the Year but also AVCA First-Time All American. She did not fully comprehend this feat until her teammate pointed out how rare it is for a freshman.

The talent that Olivia has is propelling her to the top of women’s volleyball, but it was one discovered late.

Growing up in Los Angeles, California, Olivia enjoyed playing all sports, primarily focusing on soccer and water polo. It wasn’t until she started playing beach volleyball with her sister when she realized the unlocked potential she had and the love for the game.

“I really liked a lot of the other sports I played, but it was very clear to me that I was only doing it to stay in shape,” Olivia said. “But then when I started playing volleyball, I was like, ‘Oh, wait. I want to be in the gym. I want to get better.’”

And she did just that.

Making history with the Panthers

In her junior season for Pittsburgh Panthers in 2025, Olivia set a program record with 41 kills against Louisville and broke it two weeks later with 45 against North Carolina. She earned AVCA Player of the Week once and ACC Offensive Player of the Week five times.

She repeated as ACC Player of the Year – the first in program history to do so – and repeated as AVCA National Player of the Year, becoming the fifth player to win it in consecutive seasons. She also received the inaugural AVCA Rightside Hitter of the Year award and again won the Honda Sports Award for volleyball.

She led the Panthers to a fifth straight national semi-final, where they were swept by eventual champions Texas A&M, finishing with a match-high 22 kills and six blocks.

International breakthrough

In addition to her collegiate accolades, Olivia has represented the United States on the international stage. She was part of the team that won gold at the 2023 Girls U19 Pan American Cup, showcasing her ability to compete and excel against top global competition. In 2024, she continued to represent her country with pride, earning a silver medal at the NORCECA Women's Pan American Cup Final Six.

She was one of only two active NCAA volleyball players selected to the United States Senior National Team for the 2025 Volleyball Nations League, where the team placed sixth.

Olivia Babcock’s combination of size, power, and court awareness has cemented her as one of the top rising stars in volleyball. As she continues her career at the University of Pittsburgh, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how she will further shape the future of the sport, both at the collegiate and international levels.
